CAD Modeling in SOLIDWORKS – Using DXF File to Create 3D

Part

Section A
Introduction to DXF File
A.1. What is DXF File?
DXF (Drawing Exchange Format) is a widely used file format developed by Autodesk for
enabling the exchange of 2D and 3D CAD data between various software. DXF files are plain
text or binary files that store vector data such as lines, arcs, and curves, making them ideal for
CAD modeling tasks.

Key Features of DXF file

• Platform-independent format for CAD data sharing.
• Supports 2D geometry and 3D models.
• Ideal for importing sketches or drawings into CAD software like SOLIDWORKS

A.2. Importance of DXF in SOLIDWORKS

1. Mobile Robots
In SOLIDWORKS, DXF files serve as an entry point for creating 3D models from 2D sketches.
DXF files are commonly used in the scenario such as:

• Reverse Engineering: Importing existing designs into SOLIDWORKS for modifications

or Enhancements

A.3. Workflow Overview

The general workflow for using a DXF file to create a 3D part in SOLIDWORKS includes:

1. Importing the DXF File

2. Preparing and Refining the Sketch
3. Using the Sketch to create 3D Model
Section B
Create a 3D Part from DXF File
B.1. DXF File for Reference
We will use the DXF file with design of part as shown in figure below. The part is provided as
“dxf_support_material.dxf”.

This is 2D Representation of 3D part, now we will use this as reference to create 3D Model.

B.2. Features Used

The features we will use for this 3D Part Design are as follows:
• Extrude Boss / Base
• Extruded Cut
• Circular Pattern
• Fillet

B.3. Resources Used

• SOLIDWORKS (Version 2022)
• Windows 10
• DXF File (dxf_support_material.dxf)
B.4. End Goal
The Final Design of our part should look like this.

B.5. Steps for Implementation

• Launch the SOLIDWORKS
• Navigate to File > Open from top Toolbar.
• Open the provided file, dxf_support_material.dxf
• In the DXF/DWG Import Dialog Window, select Import to a New Part as: > 2D Sketch
• Click Next
• Keep other settings as default.

• At the End Click Finish.

• The 2D Sketch is successfully imported, it should look as follows.
• Now in the Left Feature Tree Design Manager, Right Click the Model and select,
Make Edit Sketch.

• Now our 2D Model is converted into sketch

• Create New sketch on Front Plane

• Create Center Circle with Center at Origin and Outer Radius at previous Entity
• It will look like the following

• Now exit the and Extrude it to 10 mm

• Next, select any face of this Extruded Body and create new sketch.

• Convert Blue Highlighted Entities, select all these highlighted entities and choose
• Now, if you click on sketch3, , it will look like this

• This is still not the Closed body, to extrude this, we need this to be a closed body.
• To form closed sketch, convert more entities as follows. Select the Sketch2 from previous

time and select Convert Entities.

• The sketch will look like following
• Now, we need to use Trim Entities to get rid of extra lines in sketch
• After Trim, our sketch will look like this.

• Now exit the sketch, and Extrude this sketch to 30 mm

• Now, we will use Circular Pattern to copy this feature throughout the Circle, we will
create 4 instances or copies.
• Select Boss-Extrude2 from Left Feature Tree Design Manager
• Then choose Circular Pattern from Linear Pattern Maximize Dialog

• In the Direction 1, select Edge<1>

• The final part should look like follows.
Lab Task
Extrude Cut and Circular Pattern for Each
Instance
Objective:
The goal of this task is familiarizing with the Circular Pattern Feature. You need to create the
part as follows. You need to create just 2 sketches and create circular pattern to replicate on other
instances.

Task Description:
Using SOLIDWORKS, create Hole on both faces of Each instance using Circular Pattern:

• Diameter: 20 mm
• Extrude Depth: Up to Next
Instructions:
1. Open the part we created earlier
2. Create new sketch on one face of any instance, draw circle with given diameter
3. Extrude the Sketch, with Direction 1 as Up to Next
4. Create new sketch on other face of same instance, draw circle with given diameter
5. Extrude the sketch, with Direction 1 as Up to Next
6. Use Circular Pattern to Replicate both these Extruded Cuts to other Instances
