Concept
“Diagnosing, Recording, Communicating”
• A monitoring and detection system

capable of
• Detecting Malfunctions
• Indicating their occurrence by means of a
Malfunction Indicator Lamp (MIL)
• Storing the information on ECU memory
• Communicating that information to scan tool

Task of OBD System
• Whenever malfunction or deterioration of components occurs
– The Malfunction Indicator Light on the Instrument panel will be
illuminated
– A fault code (DTC) will be stored in the ECU
– Sensor and actuator data also (freeze frame) will be recorded
• Service data at the time of failure is automatically recorded
example. Engine temperature, engine speed, vehicle speed,
etc.

OBD Threshold limits:


Mass of Oxides of Nitrogen (NOx)= MIL - 5g/kWh & Torque Limit - 7g/kWh
Mass of Particulate (PM) = 0.10 g/kWh

OBD II Requirements

Torque Limit:

• The torque limiter comes into effect about 40%

• Goods > 16 tons, Passenger >7.5 tons

OBD II shall be operational for following conditions

- At all ambient temperatures above (- 7)°C

- At all altitudes below 1600 m

- At engine coolant temperatures above 70 °C
