CATALOGUE DESCRIPTION
Concepts of thermal physics. The laws of thermodynamics. Problems of electrostatics involving electric forces, electric fields, electric flux,
Gauss’s law and electric potential. Problems of electrodynamics involving magnetic forces, magnetic fields and magnetic flux. Faraday’s law.

AIMS & OBJECTIVES

• To introduce the fundamental concepts of thermodynamics, electricity and magnetism necessary for engineering science and provide essential background
for engineering students.
• To provide students with a deeper understanding of fundamental laws and concepts of natural phenomena.
• To improve students’ problem-solving skills.
• To strengthen students’ creative and systematic thinking capability.

GRADING CRITERIA
A
Excellent understanding of the concepts and the principles as demonstrated by correct and accurate knowledge and application of
(excellent)
~85% and above theory/laws in solving problems. Response to problems is clear, legible, concise and accurate. Excellent performance.
B Better than average understanding of the concepts and the principles as demonstrated by correct and accurate knowledge and
(good) application of theory/laws in solving problems but does not have the depth and outstanding quality of an "A". Response to problems
~70% and above is fairly clear, legible, but occasionally contains some inaccuracies. Performance exceeds the minimum requirements.
C An average understanding of the concepts and the principles as demonstrated by reasonably correct knowledge and application of
(average) theory/laws in solving problems but does not have any depth. Response to problems is reasonably clear, legible, but contains
~60 % and above inaccuracies. It reveals a sufficient understanding of the material but lacks depth in understanding and approach/application. Content
and form do not go beyond basic expectations and/or display some substantial errors. Acceptable but non-exceptional performance
that does not go beyond the minimum requirements.
D Minimal knowledge and barely sufficient understanding of the concepts and the principles as demonstrated by approximately correct
(barely sufficient) application of theory/laws in solving problems. Response to problems is not very clear and is barely legible and contains many
~50% and above inaccuracies. It reveals a minimum (confused) understanding of the material and lacks depth in understanding and
approach/application. Content and form do not adequately meet the basic expectations, and/or display significant errors. Performance
demonstrates severe problems in one or more areas.
F
Work does not meet the most minimal standards. It reveals no understanding of the material, lack of basic academic skills and
(fail)
knowledge, or completely incomprehensible writing. Performance is not acceptable.
Below 50%
NG Not enough information to assign a letter grade.
nil grade 1. Overall Attendance to the classes < 50% will lead automatically to the grade NG. All repeating students who
fulfilled the attendance requirement of a course once, i.e., whose previous grade is not NG / W are exempted from
the attendance requirement.
2. Laboratory Participation < 3 will lead automatically to the grade NG.
3. Missing any 2 two exams will lead automatically to the grade NG.
METHOD OF ASSESSMENT
• 10% Pre-Midterm Quiz (01 November 2024; Friday at 17:30 in CL Building)
• 30% Midterm Exam (to be announced in the Midterm Exams Period: 08-23 November 2024)

• 5% Lab Participation

• 10% Lab Final Exam; Topics: About All Experiments Conducted in the Physics-2 Laboratory (Will be held with the Final Exam)

• 45% Final Exam (to be announced in the Final Exams Period: 03-18 January 2024) Topics: All Chapters

• TOTAL %100
EXTRA BONUS POINTS ELIGIBLE “IN-CLASS & OUT-OF-CLASS” ACTIVITIES

• 5% Attendance Bonus Points (Those with 100%-90% participation will receive 5 points; those with 89%-80% participation will

receive 4 points; those with 79%-70% participation will receive 3 points; those with 69%-50% participation will receive 1 point )

• 10% E-Quizzes: Four e-quizzes will be conducted throughout the semester, and the purpose of these quizzes is to help you prepare for

the main exams. Each e-quiz is worth 5 points, and at the end of the semester, only your best two quiz results will be considered. Participation

in the e-quizzes is not mandatory; it is optional.

The e-quizzes will be held on Saturday afternoons via the Webassign system (https://www.webassign.net ), which is integrated with your

main textbook. The dates below are proposed dates, and if there are any changes, you will be notified. You can obtain the Webassign system,

which is integrated with your electronic textbook, from the EMU BOOK STORE (@CL Building).

The e-quiz system will be conducted online, and each student is responsible for their own internet, software, and hardware facilities. On the

other hand, the system can also be easily accessed via mobile devices, laptops, desktops, and library&university computers.

Dates:
1st E-Quiz: 12 October 2024, Saturday at 16:00 (CYP time) (5P)

2nd E-Quiz: 19 October 2024, Saturday at 16:00 (CYP time) (5P)

3rd E-Quiz: 07 December 2024, Saturday at 16:00 (CYP time) (5P)

4th E-Quiz: 21 December 2024, Saturday at 16:00 (CYP time) (5P)

If there is any change in the e-quiz date(s), you will be notified at least 3 days in advance.

IMPORTANT NOTES
Attendance:
Active participation in lectures is a must for the successful completion of this course. If a nonrepeating student's total attendance (classes, tutorials,
laboratories, and exams) is below 50%, automatically the grade NG will be assigned. The same rule is also valid for repeating students having received a
grade NG or W in the previous semester. Repeating students having received a grade D-, F or having higher grade are exempted from the attendance
requirement of lectures and tutorials. (Please Refer to Policy of Exemption of the Labs)

Make-up Exam:
According to the Examinations and Evaluations Regulation of Eastern Mediterranean University by Law students who have not attended any of the Midterm, In-
term, or Final exams must provide a valid excuse for not attending the exam within 3 working days after the exam to be granted the right to enter the make-up
examination. For any student missing more than one of the main exams (Pre-midterm quiz, Midterm, and Final or the corresponding make-up exam), the
grade NG will be assigned.

Objections:
Graded exam papers will be available for inspection upon request. According to the regulations of the University, any objections or re-grade requests should be
made within a week following the announcement of grades.

Note on Resit Exam:

In case you fail the course, or you get a grade C-, D+, or D and have an academic warning in their transcripts are entitled to take the Resit Exam.

Calculation of the numerical total after the Resit Exam: Laboratory Participation+ Resit Exam (95%)
Resit exams encompass the total weight of all in-term - Pre-Midterm Quiz, Midterm and Final%Lab-Final - exams conducted during the semester.

(i) Semester letter grades calculated after Resit exams are transferred to the computer system through the portal by the end of the day specified in the Academic
Calendar, and they are displayed under the heading 'Resit Exam Results' in the student grade transcript.

(ii) To be eligible for Resit exams, students must apply through the portal on the computer system within 3 days following the announcement of semester grades,
specifying the courses for which they will take Resit exams. Students who do not apply will not be allowed to take Resit exams. Students who have applied for Resit
exams can withdraw their applications through the same process within 3 days from the final application date.
(iii) The maximum duration of Resit exams is 120 minutes.

(iv) Resit exams are not compensable. Students who apply for Resit exams but do not attend the exam are considered to have received a grade of "0" for that exam.
