Hints and answers for exercise 7

11.26
1. Use the data from Jan 21: P4 (under ”Old Exams”), but use the value given for Kf in the problem.
Assume W8 = W5 . Note that the old exam is solved using the older version of the 65nm data sheet, so
for consistency, we will do the same here.
2. Calculate the transconductance of M1 , M2 , M3 , M4 , M6 , and M7 :
• gm1 = gm2 = 324µS
• gm3 = gm4 = 257µS
• gm5 = gm8 = 812µS
• gm6 = 1.03mS
• gm7 = 917µS
3. Calculate the output resistances:
• ro1 = ro2 = 444kΩ
• ro3 = ro4 = 333kΩ
• ro6 = 83.3kΩ
• ro7 = 111kΩ
4. The gain of the input stage is: a1 = gm1 (ro2 ||ro4 ) = 61.7V/V
5. The gain of the output stage is: a2 = gm6 (ro6 ||ro7 ) = 48.9V/V
6. The total gain is: a = a1 · a2 = 3.02kV/V
7. The general form of the output noise current from a MOS transistor will be:

i2n,o 2 Kf
= 4kT gm + g2 (1)
∆f 3 W LCox f m

8. Equivalently, we can write the input noise voltage as:

2
vn,i 2 1 Kf
= 4kT + (2)
∆f 3 gm W LCox f

9. Next, we need to find the output noise voltage contribution from each transistor and divide it by
the voltage gain squared to get the input-referred noise. The input-referred noise contribution from
2
transistor MX will be referred to as veq,iX . The ∆f will henceforth be dropped for improved readability.
10. The input-referred noise contribution from M1 , M2 , M3 , and M4 will be (see page 780-781, eq. (11.119)):
 2
2 2 2 gm3 2 2 )
veq,i,1−4 = vn,i1 + vn,i2 + (vn,i3 + vn,i4
gm1

1
11. The output voltage noise from M6 is:
2
vn,o6 = i2n,o6 · (ro6 ||ro7 )2

12. The input-referred voltage noise from M6 will then be:

2
2
vn,o6 i2n,o6 · (ro6 ||ro7 )2 2
vn,i6
veq,i6 = 2
= 2
= 2
a (gm1 (ro2 ||ro4 )gm6 (ro6 ||ro7 )) a1

13. Finally, we need to consider the voltage noise at the gate M7 . This noise will not only come from M7 ,
but also from M8 due to its diode-connection. So the total voltage noise will be:
2
vn,i7,tot 2
= vn,i7 2
+ vn,i8

14. The output noise voltage will then be:

2
2
vn,o7 2
= vn,i7,tot · gm7 (ro6 ||ro7 )2

15. Leading to the input-referred voltage noise:

2 2
vn,o7

2 2 gm7 1
veq,i7 = 2 = vn,i7,tot
a gm6 a21

16. Now, we can add all the input-referred noise contributions to get the total input-referred noise:
2 2 2 2 2
vn,i6 vn,i7 + vn,i8

2 2 2 2 2 2 gm3 2 2 )+ gm7
veq,tot = veq,i,1−4 + veq,i6 + veq,i7 = vn,i1 + vn,i2 + (vn,i3 + vn,i4 +
gm1 a21 gm6 a21

2
17. Replacing all vn,ix with the expression from eq. (2) (recommended to do this in Matlab) gives:
2
veq,tot
(a) f = 100Hz: ∆f = 4.14 · 10−13 V2 /Hz
2
veq,tot
(b) f = 1kHz: ∆f = 4.16 · 10−14 V2 /Hz
2
veq,tot
(c) f = 10kHz: ∆f = 4.27 · 10−15 V2 /Hz
