task 1 table
The table illustrates the average distances that each English citizen traveled using
different forms of transport from 1985 to 2000.
Overall, there was an upward trend in the total number of miles traveled by the English
by all modes of transport over the period examined. In addition, the car was by far the
most popular form of transport in both years.
In 1985, people opted for the car as a mode of transport the most, moving 3,199m,
while the opposite was true for taxis, at only 13m. Over the following 15 years, the
number of miles by means of car soared considerably to 4806m, compared to that of
taxis, with a threefold growth to 42m in 2000. Similar changes were seen in the figures
for trains and others, increasing dramatically to 366m and 585m respectively in 2000.
Looking at the remaining vehicles, however, there was a downward tendency in the
average distances for three forms of transport, including walking, bicycle and local
bus. In 1985, the number of miles for walking was recorded at 255m, significantly
farther than that for bicycle, at 51m. 15 years later, the figures for both walking and
bicycle witnessed a notable drop to 237 and 41 in that order. Regarding local buses, it
decreased by nearly a half, from 429m in 1985 to 274m in 2000.
