Reading

Read the text about protecting yourself online. Seven sentences have been removed. Choose the correct sentence (A-H) that fits each gap
(1-7). There is one extra sentence that you do not need to use.

Protect Yourself Online

Do you want to know how to protect your personal information from hackers and cyber thieves? Here are
a few basic steps that will help you.

Encrypt your information

You don’t need to be a computer geek to encrypt e-mails and files. Modern tools have made it possible for anyone
1 to
write e-mails and other information in code. You should also encrypt data on your USB drives and SIM cards.

Watch out for impersonators

2 If a company sends you e-mails asking for your details,
3 don’t click on links in the e-mail. Instead, go to the
company site and contact them through customer service.

Overwrite deleted files

Deleting information on a computer doesn’t mean it’s really gone. 4 The only way to make your old data
disappear forever is to overwrite it. There are tools which can help you do this.

Protect your computer from malware

Malware is software which has been designed to infiltrate or damage
5 your computer. Malware can be hidden on
websites and e-mails, in downloadable files, photos or videos.

Install operating system updates

Operating system updates can be very irritating. 6 Failing to install these updates means your computer is at
risk.
Turn off your computer
When you have finished using your computer or laptop, turn it off. Leaving 7 computers on, especially if they are
connected to the Internet, makes it easier for hackers to install malware.

A Ask whether they have sent a request, and only give them the information if the answer is yes.
B It’s like leaving the door to your house open while you’re asleep!
C Don’t give out personal information unless you’re positive that you’re dealing with a legitimate site.
D Run a good anti-virus protection program, do scans for spyware and avoid clicking on suspicious
e-mail links or websites.
E But they’re extremely necessary, as they contain software that will protect your computer from new viruses.
F In many cases, this data still exists on the disk and can be recovered by someone with computer skills.
G You can buy them at any computer shop.
H This makes it more difficult for criminals to uncover your personal data if your device is lost or stolen.
