I. OBJECTIVES
A. Content Standard The learners should be able to demonstrate understanding of volcanoes found in the Philippines.
B. Performance Standard The learners should be able to participate in activities that reduce risk and lessen effects of natural phenomenon such as volcanic
eruption.
C. Learning Competency/ Differentiate between active and inactive volcanoes
Objectives At the end of the lesson, the learners are expected to:
1. describe the feature and characteristics of active and inactive volcanoes;
Write the LC code for each. 2. identify examples of active and inactive volcanoes through images, maps or descriptions;
3. value the importance of monitoring active and inactive volcanoes to ensure safety and preparedness.

For me Ma’am, the first picture shows that the volcano is erupting violently,
while the second picture, the volcano might have some activity inside but
not visible or easily spotted just by looking from afar. Maybe when scientist
look closely or analyze the materials emitted from the volcano.

Your answers are correct! The first picture shows that the volcano is
erupting while the next picture shows a volcano not having any particular
activity.

Let us now check the volcano concept map that you did yesterday. Who (A student raised a hand.)
can share their answers? My answers are: a volcano is a landform that release hot gases, lava
and melting rocks. It is a huge landform. It is composed of layers of
cooled lava, ashes and rocks. It also has different shapes and types. It
can be dangerous to humans, animals and properties.

Since volcanoes are always mentioned since you are in elementary. I am

volcanoes based on the appearance, what it emits during eruption, and
the positive and negative effects that happens during a volcanic eruption.

(2 minutes) To start off, I have here a word play activity about volcanoes. Try to guess
the word based on the definition.

For the first one, what do we have here? I think the word that is being defined is an active volcano.

Based on the definition, there is an activity that is going on with this
volcano. There is a release of gases and ground movement. Let’s see if
your answer is correct.

Very Good! The first one is an active volcano. The second one is an inactive volcano based on the definition.
How about the second one?

PHIVOLCS stands for the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and
Seismology.

Very Good! Later on we will discuss the importance of PHIVOLCS in our

country when it comes to volcanic disaster preparedness.

For the next one, we have the following definition. The next definition describes an eruption Ma’am.

Notable examples of active volcanoes in the Philippines are the Taal
Volcano in Batangas, Mayon Volcano in Albay and the Kanlaon Volcano
in Negros in the Visayas Region all of which shared a number of eruptions
a couple of times throughout the year.

Inactive Volcanoes are those volcanoes which show distinct physical

signs of changing due to erosion and deep-gully formation. They have
not erupted for the last 10,000 years and do not show any signs that a
possible eruption or any volcanic activity will occur in the future.

Since you are already aware that our country has many volcanoes. It is
time for us to be prepared since we can never tell when volcanic
eruption will occur.

I. Evaluating learning Assessment
(3 minutes) Directions: Choose the letter of the correct answer.

If there’s still time the following assessment will be given to students. The students answer the assessment.

1. Which of the following is true about an active volcano?

a.) It has not erupted in a long time
b.) It is unlikely to erupt again
c.) It is currently erupting or shows signs of future eruption
d.) It is located far from tectonic plate boundaries.

2. What is a defining feature of an inactive volcano?

a.) It erupts frequently.
b.) It has been dormant for thousands of years.
c.) It is a risk of erupting in the near future.
d.) It is located at the center of an active tectonic boundary.

3. What is the difference between active and inactive volcanoes?

a.) active volcanoes have smaller eruptions compared to inactive
volcanoes.
b.) inactive volcanoes have not erupted for a long period and are unlikely
to erupt.
c.) active volcanoes are currently erupting or showing signs of eruption,

d.) active volcanoes are found only on oceanic crust while, inactive ones
are on continental crust.

Kindly, exchange papers with your seatmate. Let us check the

assessment.

Who wants to answer number 1? The answer for number 1 is C.

Correct! Because an active volcano is one that is either currently
erupting or shows signs of potential future eruptions, such as seismic
activity or gas emissions. Options a and b describes features of inactive
volcanoes, and d is incorrect because active volcanoes are often found
ate tectonic plate boundaries, not necessarily far from them.

How about number 2? The answer for number 2 is letter b.

Very Good! An inactive volcano is one that has not erupted for a long
time and shows no current signs of future eruption. Option a describes
active volcanoes, c refers more to active volcanoes, and d is incorrect
because inactive volcanoes can be found at tectonic boundaries but are
not currently active.

Lastly, number 3? The answer for number 3 is letter c.

Can you explain why? It is because active volcanoes are currently erupting or showing signs of
eruption, while inactive ones are not.

That’s right! Active volcanoes are those that are either erupting or
exhibiting signs of eruption, while inactive ones are volcanoes that have
not erupted in a long time and show no current signs of future eruptions.
Option d is misleading because both active and inactive volcanoes can
be found on oceanic or continental crust.
