Single Phase Circuit Analysis:

1. 230V, 50Hz ac is applied to a coil of 0.06H inductance, 2.5Ω resistance and 6.8μF capacitor in series.
Calculate the current and phase angle of the circuit. Also calculate the voltage across each of the circuit
components. [Ans: 0.5119∠89.680, VR=1.279V, VL=9.649V, VC = 239.2V]
2. Calculate magnitude and phase of the current from the source in the following ac parallel circuit. [Ans:
2.918∠-53.3480 A]

3. A circuit is composed of a resistance of 9 Ω and series connected inductive reactance of 12 Ω. When a


voltage is applied to the circuit, the resulting steady current is found to be i = 28.3 Sin377t. What is
the value of the complex impedance? Determine the time expression for the applied voltage. Find the
value of inductance in Henry. [Ans: 15∠53.130; 424.2 Sin(377t+53.130); 0.0318 H]
4. A 50Hz, 220V, voltage is applied to a capacitor of value 0.636μF. (i) Write equations for instantaneous
voltages and current as functions of time t. Assume voltage at time t=0 to be zero and going positive.
(ii) Plot v and I against angle ωt. (iii) Draw the phasor diagram for voltage and current. [Ans:
v(t)=311 Sin(314t), i(t) = 62.2X10-3 Sin(314t+π/2)]
5. A sinusoidal voltage v = 230∠150 of frequency 50 Hz is applied to a series R-L circuit consisting of
R=4Ω and L=0.05H. Calculate (i) the rms current and its phase angle. (ii) Power factor (iii) average
power drawn by the circuit (iv) Reactive power and apparent power [Ans: 14∠ -60.710 A; cos
75.71 (lagging), 805 watts; 3163 VAR, 3264 VA]
6. A voltage v = 141.4 Sin(314t) is applied to a coil having inductance of 0.1H and resistance 10Ω. Find (i)
expression for the instantaneous current. (ii) rms value of the voltage and current (iii) power factor
(iv) power consumed in the coil. [Ans: i(t) = 4.29 Sin(314t-72.330), 100V, 3.03A,
0
cos72.33 (lagging), 91.8 Watts].
7. A coil having resistance of 10 Ω and inductance of 0.2H is connected in series with coil B having
resistance of 30Ω and inductance of 0.1H. The two coils in series are fed from 200V, 50Hz supply.
Determine (i) the voltage across each coil. (ii) Power dissipated in each coil. (iii) Power factor of the
circuit as a whole. [Ans: VA=136.66V, VB=93.3V, PA=46.14W, PB=138.4W, Cos670]

Three Phase Circuit Analysis:

8. A 220V, 3-Φ voltage is applied to a balanced delta connected 3-Φ load of phase impedance (15+j20)
Ω. Calculate:
a. The phase voltages [Ans: vR=220∠00, vY=220∠-1200, vB=220∠1200]

c. The power consumed per phase [Ans: 1161.603 W]
d. Draw the phasor diagram
e. What is the phasor sum of three line currents? [Ans: 0]

9. Phase voltage and current of a star-connected inductive load is 150V and 25A. Power factor of load is
0.707 (lag). The power is measured using two wattmeters. Find the readings of wattmeters.
[Ans: W1=6273W, W2=1681W]
