Answer all the questions

(State clearly the valid assumptions made, if any, in sloving the problem)

1. Explain in detail the various control factors applicable to the design of wastewater
treatment system using activated sludge process. (5).

2. A 200 mL sample of water required 1.1 mL of 0.02N H2SO4 to titrate it to

phenolphthalein endpoint and 22.9 mL of 0.02N H2SO4 to titrate it further to the methyl
orange endpoint. Assuming no calcite precipitation, find the total and carbonate
alkalinities in CaCO3 equivalent. (5)

3. A rapidly growing city has a population of thousand times the last four digit of your entry
number (say, if you entry number is 2018ceb1001, the population of the city is 1001000)
in 1991. In 2001, the population increased to 2.5 fold of the 1991 population. In 2011 and
2021 the population increased to 5.5 fold and 8 fold of the 1991 population, respectively.
Find the expected population in 2041 using appropriate method (5).

4. For the forecasted population in 2041 (Q3) estimate the lime-soda ash requirement (in
kg/day) if the raw water quality is as follows: (10)
pH: 7.5; Calcium: 150 mg/L; Magnesium: 40 mg/L; Sodium: 25 mg/L; Bicarbonate: 350
mg/L; Sulphate: 230 mg/L; and Chloride: 35 mg/L. Note: Total Carbonate concentration
is: 6.58 x 10-3 M.
5. Using an illustration explain the different phases of microbial growth. Derive the
expression for modelling microbial growth kinetics and state the definition of half-
saturation constant. (4+4+2)
6. Elaborate on the various mechanisms involved in the process of coagulation and
flocculation. (5)
7. Explain with appropriate equations the process of ion exchange and its application in
water treatment. (5)
8. Explain the working of trickling filter with an illustration. (5)
