South Africa’s Big Five

Let’s go on a safari through South Africa and meet the five most impressive
animals: The Big Five!

The ‘Big Five’ is a term that was coined by big game hunters in the late 19th and
early 20th centuries. It describes the five most dangerous animals to hunt by
foot.

Nowadays, however, the term ‘Big Five’ is used to describe these majestic
animals, which includes the buffalo, lion, leopard, elephant and rhinoceros.

The Cape Buffalo

The buffalo is a large hoofed animal and a member of Buffalo Fact Sheet
the bovid family. With its massive pair of horns, it can
defend itself against African predators or fight for Type: Hoofed Mammal
rank. They are aggressive animals and their moody Diet: Herbivore
behaviour and unpredictability makes them, quite
possibly, the most dangerous of the Big Five. Habitat: Savannah grasslands

Buffaloes are social animals and can be found grazing Weight: 300 - 900 kg
and chomping on long grass in large herds. They are Lifespan: 11 to 22 years
herbivores and only eat plants, which they regurgitate
later to chew a second time.

Buffaloes never roam farther than 20 kilometres

from a body of water, because they have to drink
water on a daily basis. They also love to cool down and
