CHE223 Term Test 2 - Solutions
Question 1 (5 marks)
In a chemical manufacturing process, defects in a batch of produced items occur
randomly at an average rate of 4 defects per 8 hour shift. Assume the number of defects
follows a Poisson distribution.
a) What is the probability that exactly 3 defects will occur in an 8 hour shift?
b) What is the probability that 2 or more defects will occur in an 8 hour shift?
c) What is the probability that 2 or less defects will occur in 1 hour?
Question 2 (8 marks)
As a consulting engineer specializing in the environment, you were hired to provide
recommendations regarding a large wastewater treatment plant. Specifically, the plant must
disinfect the wastewater to two standards (based on 20 daily tests per month):
• The average log base-10 fecal coliform concentration should not exceed 2.3 logs
• The log base-10 fecal coliform concentration should not exceed 3 more than once per month.
In the last 10 samples (2 weeks of sampling), the sample log-10 average was 1.8 with a standard
deviation of 1.2 log. Assume the log concentration is normally distributed.
a) Determine the upper 99% confidence interval on the mean of the log concentration.
b) Based on your result in a), should the plant be concerned regarding meeting the first standard
(i.e. that the average log base-10 fecal coliform concentration should not exceed 2.3 logs in a
given month)?
c) Determine the 95% confidence interval for the standard deviation of the log concentration.
d) Determine the upper 95% prediction interval for the log concentration.
e) Based on your result in d), should the plant be concerned regarding meeting the second standard
(i.e. that log base-10 fecal coliform concentration should not exceed 3 more than once per
month)?

Because the prediction interval is well above our value of 3, the plant should be concerned.
Question 3 (6 marks)
As a quality engineer, you are looking at the concentration of a compound from two different vendors.
You want to make sure that both vendors are producing a similar product. You have sampled multiple
bottles from both vendors and the data is summarized in the following table. Assume the
concentrations are normally distributed, and their standard deviations are similar.
Vendor A Vendor B
Number of samples 12 10
Sample mean 10.1 mg/mL 9.9 mg/mL
Sample standard deviation 0.10 mg/mL 0.08 mg/mL
a) At the 1% significance, determine if the means are different (you should apply appropriate hypothesis
testing).
b) Comment on your result in a).
