High Speed Ground Transportation
System (HSGT):

 High Speed Ground Transportation System

(HSGT):
– Concept developed to meet the challenges of the
increasing demands of mass transportation and
recover the share of traffic from road and other
modes of transport
 HSGT: High Speed Trains
– One that run at over 250 kmph on dedicated track
and at over 200 kmph on upgraded conventional
track (IUC) International Union of Railways
8
High Speed Trains: India

 Rajdhani Express
– 130 kmph

 Satabdi Express
– 150 kmph

9
Infrastructure Requirements for
High Speed Trains

 Track
 Bridges and Tunnels
 Rolling stock
 Signaling
 Miscellaneous issues

10
Tilting Trains

 The train tilts on the curve and gives additional

super-elevation to the passengers
– thus pedestrians experience less cant deficiency
and more comfort.
– Depending up the curvature and other parameters,
 Vehicles with tilting suspension system having
tilting mechanism
– To overcome the limitations of speed on account of
tight curves on mixed traffic routes, where It is not
possible to cant the track
11
Tilting Trains

 Can go up to 25% - 40%faster around curve than

conventional train without upsetting the passengers
 Cant defiency up to 275 mm is permitted on SG.
 Used normally speed > 350 kmph

Maglev Trains: An Introduction

 High speed trains have speed limitations

– contact between rail and wheel
– difficult to maintain with increasing speed
 Maglev trains, a practical proposition using the concept
of linear motor and magnetic levitation
 450-550 kmph
 Speed controlled by varying frequency of power
passing through coils.
 The entry to the carriages is from the top; thus
overhead platform will be built for passengers to board
13 the train Maglev Train_Video
Maglev Trains: An Introduction

 Trains are provided with

– retractable landing wheels and horizontal guide
wheels
– which come into operation whenever the speed
comes down below 200 kmph
– The minimum to achieve levitation, 200 kmph
 Trains are propelled using linear motor power
– Three-phase coils forming the starter of the linear
motor
14 – Installed in the sidewalls of the guideway
Maglev Trains: Technology

 When electric current is passed through

propulsion coils on the ground
– Magnetic field is produced
 The train is propelled forward
– by the attractive forces of opposite pole and
repulsion forces of similar poles
– acting between the coils (on ground) and
superconducting magnet (in the vehicles)
 based on linear motor concept
15 – Maglev Train_Demo_Video
Maglev Trains: Advantages

 Floats 10 mm above the guide way

 Propelled by guide way
 Low maintenance cost
 Low noise
 High speed up to 500 kmph

 Disadvantage:
– high corridor cost
16
Super Maglev Trains: Introduction

 2050 A. D.
– New ideas of supersonic train
– Using maglev technology
 Enclosing the magnet train in a tube
– From which air will be evacuated
– i.e. system without aerodynamic resistance
 Power required
– Minimized using super-conducting magnets

17
Super Maglev Trains: Introduction

 Vacuum tube and superconductivity

– Tube 50 m below the sea bed or to surface float
– Cost of laying = 4 millions UK Pounds per km
(approx)
 Travel profile (eg: UK to US 2hrs)
– Acceleration time 6 min
– Deceleration time 15 min
– Remainder journey speed 3700 kmph
