PART A | ELECTIVE OVERVIEW

A. INSTRUCTIONS
▪ An elective is a learning experience created in the curriculum to provide an opportunity for
the learner to explore, discover and experience areas or streams interest in the profession.

▪ Objectives of the elective is to provide the learner with opportunities:


o For diverse learning experiences
o To do research/community projects that will stimulate enquiry, self-directed,
experiential learning and lateral thinking.

▪ Two weeks each are designated for Block 1 – Basic Science Electives and Block 2 –
Clinical Sciences Elective rotations after completion of the examination at end of the third
MBBS Part I and before commencement of third MBBS Part II.

▪ It is MANDATORY for learners to do an elective.

▪ The elective time SHOULD NOT BE used to make up for missed clinical postings, shortage
of attendance or other purposes.

▪ Block 1 Basic Science Elective shall be done in a pre-selected pre/para clinical


department/s, centre of excellence, or other basic sciences laboratory or under a
researcher in an ongoing research project for half day (02.00pm – 05.00pm). During the
Block 1 Basic Science Elective, regular clinical postings SHALL continue.

▪ Block 2 Clinical Science Elective shall be done in Clinical departments; Specialities,


Super specialities, ICUs, Blood Bank, Casualty, Supervised learning in Rural / Urban
Community Clinics for Full day (09.00am – 05.00pm).

▪ Institutions will pre-determine the number and nature of electives, names of the
supervisors, and the number of learners in each elective based on the local conditions,
available resources, and faculty.

▪ At KMC, Manipal have adopted the mechanism for allocation of electives based on students
PY I and PY II MERIT BASED PREFERENCES.

B. ATTENDANCE

Attendance of NOT LESS THAN 75% and successful completion of items that require
elective portfolio/logbook entry and their submission is a requirement for the student to
become eligible to take the final MBBS summative examination.

C. ELIGIBILITY
To appear final MBBS Exam; the student MUST;

• Obtain 75% Attendance.


• Submit elective learning experience Logbook - cum – portfolio by the end of the
respective elective period.
o Note: A separate Logbook - cum – portfolio has to be maintained by the student for the Block 1
Basic Science Elective and Block 2 Clinical Science Elective
• Complete successfully elective learning objectives during the posting signed by
preceptor with a “meets expectation ‘(M)’ grade”.

D. ASSESSMENT
Assessment will be FORMATIVE and recorded in PRECEPTOR EVALUATION REPORT

Format enclosed at the end of this document as per the Medical Council of India, Module 6: Electives for Undergraduate
Medical Education Program, 2020 p 1-30 and GMER, 2019).

Assessment elements could include documentation of experiences, observations, reflections


and presentations by the student. This may be entered appropriately to the portfolio or as an
annexure to the logbook to document the student participation. The preceptor should verify
and attest with signature the portfolio entries by the student to ensure successful completion
of the work undertaken. Examples for portfolio entries are listed below;

- Lab notes
- Patient counselling sessions done
- Participation in grand rounds
- SDL documentation
- Presentation
- Day-to-day participation in departmental activity
- Performance of assigned tasks
- Presentation of worked up case in department
- Seminars
- Case records
- Submission of assignments
- Reflection on learnings
