CHAPTER -1

MATTER

1. Liquids and gases are collectively called as fluids. Justify?

Liquids and gases are called fluids because they both can flow easily. They do not have a
fixed shape and hence takes up the shape of the container. Liquids and gases are not rigid as
intermolecular force of attraction is less.
2. Explain atoms and molecules with the help of examples.
Atoms: Atoms are the basic building building blocks of matter. Eg: Oxygen(O) , Hydrogen(H),
Nitrogen(N).
Molecules: Atoms combine together to form molecules. Eg: One water molecule is made up
of 2 hydrogen atoms and one oxygen atom. ¿)
3. Differentiate between elements and compounds.

Elements Compounds
Compound are substances which are
Elements are pure substances which formed by two or more different

There are nearly 118 elements (at Compounds are almost endless.
present) of which nearly 94 occur
naturally on Earth.
Some of the examples of elements A few examples of compounds are
are Iron, Copper, Gold, etc. H 2 O NaCl, etc.

4. Arrange solid liquid and gas in order:

a. Increasing intermolecular forces
Gases < Liquids < Solids
b. Decreasing intermolecular forces.
Gases < Liquids < Solids

Exemplar problems:

1. On stretching is spring, it changes its shape. Will you classify spring as a solid? Why?
A spring can change its shape on stretching but it is a solid. This happens because pressure is
supplied on the spring which changes its shape and it gains its original shape when released.
so it is a solid.
2. Why do gases occupy the entire space available to them in the closed vessel?
In gases the force of attraction between the molecules are very weak. Therefore the
molecules of the gas spread in all directions and occupy the entire space available. A gas fills
its container, taking both the shape and volume of the container.
3. What are the conditions necessary for something to be called as matter? Can force be called
as matter? Why?
Matter should have mass and able to occupy space. Force cannot be considered matter
because force has neither mass nor occupies space.
4. Water can exist in three states: Solid (Ice), Liquid or gas (water vapour). Which state of
matter has least density? Why?
Gases have least density because they have large intermolecular spaces. So there are very
few molecules per unit volume and hence density is minimum.
5. State one property of liquid that solid does not possess.
Liquids have fluidity as they can flow but solids cannot.
