raditionally, American colleges and universities have awarded Latin honors to
graduates for high academic achievement. At the University of Georgia, Latin
honors designations are based on overall grade-point average, including coursework
transferred from other institutions, as follows:
The University of Georgia Honors Program awards the distinctions of with Honors, with High
Honors, and with Highest Honors to its graduates who meet additional academic criteria.
Graduates with an overall grade-point average of 4.0 are designated First Honor Graduates.

he history of academic dress dates back to the Middle Ages. In the late 19th century,
representatives from American colleges and universities met at Columbia University to make
recommendations for the dress code in use today. Bachelors’ gowns have closed fronts and long
pointed sleeves. Masters’ gowns have oblong sleeves open at the wrists. The rear part of the oblong
shape is square cut, and the front part has an arc cut. Gowns may be worn either open or closed.
Doctors’ gowns have bell-shaped sleeves, velvet facings down the front, and three bars across the
sleeves. The colors of these facings and crossbars represent the subject to which the degree pertains.
Hoods are the most distinctive feature of the American code and are generally black. All are lined in
silk with the official colors of the university or college conferring the degree. The University of Georgia
colors are red and black. The binding or edging of the hood is velvet, with the color often indicative of
the degree being awarded.
The black mortarboard cap and tassel is worn for all degrees. Bachelors’ degrees have color tassels
appropriate to the subject. The black tassel is worn for all advanced degrees. The colors associated with
the subjects are as follows:
A fourragère (braided cord) is worn on the left shoulder of each First Honor Candidate. A red, silver,
and black cord is worn by students selected by their deans to receive the University of Georgia Award
of Excellence, presented at the Presidential Honors Day Luncheon. Multi-colored tassels as indicated
below are worn by all honors candidates:
The 48-inch mace is made of mahogany with the seal of the University on four sides. It is engraved
with the name of each School or College at the University of Georgia and the year of its founding. The
Grand Marshal leads the academic processional carrying the mace.
The chain of office features a silver medallion of the University of Georgia seal. The chain lists the
twenty-two presidents of the University of Georgia and their years of service. The chain of office is
worn by the President of the University at each Commencement ceremony.
