34. i. A group of students took an old shoe box and covered it with a black paper from all sides. 5
They fixed a source of light (a torch) at one end of the box by making a hole in it and made
another hole on the other side to view the light. They placed a milk sample contained in a
beaker/tumbler in the box as shown in the figure. They were amazed to see that milk taken
in the tumbler was illuminated. They tried the same activity by taking a salt solution but
found that light simply passed through it.
(a) Explain why the milk sample was illuminated. Name the phenomenon involved.
(b) Explain why the same results were not observed with a salt solution.
ii. Explain why particles of a colloidal solution do not settle down when left undisturbed, while
in the case of a suspension they do
iii. Give two methods to liquefy atmospheric gases.

i. On heating a substance, it was observed that the temperature remains constant during its
melting point. Explain why this happens with relevant reasoning.
ii. Temperature can be expressed in three important scales. These are the Celsius scale (0C),
Fahrenheit scale (0F), and Kelvin scale (K). The Kelvin scale is often used to express the
temperature in scientific data. Ram and Arun studied different temperature scales. From the
following data, whose answer is correct? If answers are incorrect calculate the correct values.

37. The minimum temperature at which a solid melt to become a liquid at the atmospheric pressure is 4
called its melting point. The energy supplied by heat overcomes the forces of attraction between the
particles. The particles leave their fixed positions and start moving more freely. A stage is reached
when the solid melts and is converted to a liquid. The temperature of the system does not change
after the melting point is reached, till all the ice melts.
