STATISTICS FOR MANAGEMENT

Problems on Binomial Distribution

1. A’s chance of winning s single game against B is 2/3. Find the chance that in a series
of five games with B, A wins (a) exactly three games (b) at least three games.

2. Three percent of a given lot of manufactured parts are defective. What is the probability
that in a sample of four items, none will be defective ?

3. The incidence of occupational disease in an industry is such that the workmen have a
20 % chance of suffering from it. What is the probability that out of six workmen, 4 or
more will contact the disease ?

4. The probability that an evening college student will graduate is 0.4. Determine the
probability that out of 5 students, (a) none (b) one, and (c) at least one will be
graduate.

5. During a cold epidemic in a factory, the chance of the workers catching a cold is 10 per
cent. What is the probability that out of 5 workers, 3 or more will catch cold ?

6. If on an average, 8 ships out of 10 arrive safely at a port. Find the mean and standard
deviation of the number of ships arriving safely out of a total of 1,600 ships.

7. Bring out the fallacy, if any, in the following statement : “The mean of a binomial
distribution is 15 and its standard deviation is 5”.

8. The mean of a binomial distribution is 20 and the standard deviation is 4. Calculate n,

p and q.

9. Four coins are tossed 160 times. Number of heads observed at each throw is recorded
and the results are given below :
No of heads at a throw : 0 1 2 3 4
Frequency : 18 52 54 32 4
Find the expected frequencies as per Binomial Distribution.

10. Fit a Binomial Distribution to the following data :

X : 0 1 2 3 4
F : 28 62 46 10 4

11. Eight coins are tossed at a time, 256 times. Number of heads observed at each throw
is recorded and the results are given below. Find the expected frequencies.
No of heads at a throw: 0 1 2 3 4 5 6 7 8
Frequency : 2 6 30 52 67 56 32 10 1

12. Ten percent of tools produced by a manufacturing processes are known to be defective.
Find the probability that in a sample of 10 tools chosen at random, exactly two and at
least four tools will be defective.
