Worksheet lab 1
Worksheet lab 1
1. A) Compare the image of the letter “e” on a slide you view with your naked eye to how that image
appears when you look at it through the microscope. What major differences would you see?
a. it would appear the same as you saw it with the naked eye. ½ point
b. it would appear backwards
c. it would appear upside down
d. it would appear both upside down and backwards
2. Name three major characteristics found in both Prokaryotic and Eukaryotic cells. (.33 per answer)
3. As you increase magnification, the object you are looking at gets larger. (1pt.)
A. At the same time what happens to the size of the field of view?
5. There are a couple of basic ways to increase the contrast of an image to make the specimen easier to
view in the microscope. One is to reduce the amount of light with the iris diaphragm. Name another
way. (1 pt.- need only one)
6. Consider what you know about the limitations of the compound light microscope. Why can’t you see
any viruses that might be inside a cell with the strongest compound light microscope?
(This question requires some thought, as we have not talked about viruses. You may have to do some
investigation here and/or read your lab exercise once again.) (1 pt.)
7. Consider the elodea plant cells you viewed in lab. Name two structures found in these cells, which
would distinguish it as a plant cell as opposed to the cheek cells you viewed. (1/2 pt. per structure)
8. Your friend asks you to view a microscope slide, which has a cell that has an outer cell wall and an area
of what appears to be DNA coiled in one region. The DNA has no distinct nuclear membrane
bounding it. He asks you what major category of cells into which you think this cell falls. (1/2 point
each)
What would you tell him?
Why?
9. Give the function of the following cell organelles (1/2 point for each):
a.) Nucleus-
b.) Ribosome-
c.) Mitochondria-
