Machine Learning & Deep Learning
Machine Learning (ML) and Deep Learning (DL) are the two main pillars of Data
Science and are the subsets of Artificial Intelligence. ML integrates computer science
and statistics to recognise patterns and make predictions from data and perform
specific tasks without being explicitly programmed. DL, a subset of ML, uses
algorithms that analyse data with a logic structure, called Artificial Neural Network
(ANN) that mimics the human thinking process. In general, the learning process of
these algorithms can either be supervised or unsupervised, depending on the data
being used to feed the algorithms.
While the global market for ML is projected to grow from $17.1 billion in 2021 to
$90.1 billion by 2026, the DL market is estimated to grow from $12.3 billion in 2021
to $60.5 billion by 2025 (bccresearch.com).

We are living in the era of big data where massive amounts of data are generated every
second. Thanks to the applications of Machine Learning and Deep Learning, yesterday’s
sci-fi has become today’s reality. Acquiring skills and competencies in these technologies
of the future will go a long way in securing your own future in this exciting domain.
Programme Overview
Data Science (DS) and Machine Learning (ML) are fundamentally reshaping
industries and driving innovation across the globe. By 2025, it is projected that
over 463 exabytes of data will be created daily, equivalent to 212 million DVDs
every day. This explosion of data offers unparalleled opportunities for
businesses to make data-driven decisions and streamline operations.
According to the 2024 World Economic Forum report, 85 million jobs are
expected to be displaced by automation, while 97 million new roles, primarily
driven by DS and ML, will emerge. The global Data Science market is estimated
to grow from $37.9 billion in 2019 to $140 billion by 2026, with Machine Learning
accounting for a significant portion of this growth.
Hence, IIT Roorkee’s Post Graduate Certificate Programme in Data Science
and Machine Learning (DSML) is ideal for professionals seeking to leverage
data and advance in this dynamic field. Combining live sessions, recorded
content, and projects, it covers topics from Python programming to advanced
machine learning. With specialisations in Deep Learning and Data Engineering,
this certification empowers learners with the skills needed to excel and lead in
the industry.

The University of Roorkee, now the Indian Institute of Technology, had a modest
beginning as the Thomason College of Engineering in the year 1847. It was
converted into the First Technical University of India in 1949 and into an IIT in 2001.
IIT Roorkee, a highly ranked institution, is among the foremost institutes of national
importance in higher technological education and in engineering, basic and applied
research. It is also a trend-setter in the area of education and research in the field
of science, technology, and engineering.
Continuing Education Center (CEC) IIT Roorkee was established in 1955 for the
promotion of knowledge up-gradation by organising refresher/specialist courses
for executives, working professionals and aspiring individuals. In addition to the
knowledge up-gradation of experienced professionals, CEC IIT Roorkee courses
also offer a launchpad to young technology professionals and students in the
domains that are most sought after by the industry. Apart from the technical
expertise available in the Departments and Centres of the Institute, wherever
necessary, experts from industries and R&D organisations are also invited to deliver
talks/lectures. CEC conducts sponsored and open participation programmes in
various disciplines of engineering, science, technology and management for
learners both nationally and globally. Through these courses, CEC also provides the
opportunity to visit and study at IIT Roorkee for a short duration.
