By increasing the supply air temperature and room condition as practised in hot aisle containment will not reduce

the air flow requirement if delta T is maintained between room condition and supply air temperature.

The secret lies in efficiency of

equipment. With condenser
running at same refrigerant
pressure, by shifting the
evaporator temperature up
Evaporator temp does seem to increase the heat
removal per compression cycle.

In short, the compressor lift is

decreased and thus efficiency
increase.
By increasing the supply air temperature and room condition as practised in hot aisle containment will not reduce
the air flow requirement if delta T is maintained between room condition and supply air temperature.

As can be seen here for the same air cooled equipment, when rated for higher return temperature, the same device
can remove more sensible heat as compared to when rated at lower temperature of 27deg C.

Thus implementation of hot and cold aisle, applying variable speed fan and increasing the room temperature
condition is the way to go about for data center. Variable speed fan should be able to match the cfm demand of the
server racks which will also modulate in accordance cooling requirement from the equipment.

Air movement control with higher supply air temperature that leaves the CRAC unit is the key to design. It is pertinent
to ensure that the higher supply air temperature leaving CRAC does not pick up unnecessary heat to reach the server
rack.

The recommended inlet air condition to server rack is from 18 to 27deg C depending on design room condition. The
higher design room condition is allowed if good air movement control is achieved, thus not having many hot spots.

Cold aisle will result in higher temperature condition outside the containment while hot aisle allows colder air
temperature within the server room.

However for hot aisle, the aisle is quite hot, may be up to 37degC. This may proof to be very unpleasant during
maintenance.

The key point is to remember that the design is for cooling of data rack which is mostly sensible heat and not for
human comfort. Thus more flexibility is accorded in design as equipment can tolerate very high temperature.
