1. Hydrogen and Nitrogen can react to produce a compound known as Hydrazine; N2H4. It has a
melting point of 2oc and boils at 114oc.
a). use a “dot” and “cross” diagram to show the bonding in Hydrazine, N2H4.

[ [3]

b). What state is Hydrazine at 0oc?

--------------------------[1]
c).Describe the movement of molecules of Hydrazine at room temperature and pressure.
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------[1]
d). (i). Hydrogen can also react with Sodium to form sodium hydride; NaH, with a
melting point of 425oc. Explain why sodium hydride; NaH, has a higher melting point
than hydrazine; N2H4.

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------[3]
(ii). Use “Dot” and cross diagram to show the bonding in sodium hydride, NaH. [3]

e). a compound was found to contain carbon, hydrogen, and chlorine in the ratio 1:1:1
respectively. Its molecular formular mass is 64. Deduce the molecular formular of the
compound.
-------------------------------------[3]
2. An anti-acid tablet contains Magnesium carbonate, MgCO3 and Zinc carbonate, ZnCO3 in the
ratio of 1:1 for each tablet. Each tablet is coated with sodium chloride crystals. 1.1035g of
the tablet was reacted with excess dilute hydrochloric acid and 0.24dm3 of Carbon dioxide,
CO2, was produced at rtp.
Hint: dilute hydrochloric acid does not react with sodium chloride.
ZnCO3 + 2HCl ZnCl2 + H2O + CO2
MgCO3 + 2HCl MgCl2 + H2O + CO2

(a)(i). Calculate number of moles of carbon dioxide; CO2,produced by the reactions.

-----------------------[2]

(i) Mass of zinc carbonate; ZnCO3 and magnesium carbonate; MgCO3 in the tablet.

Mass of zinc carbonates; ZnCO3 ____________g

Mass of Magnesium carbonates; MgCO3 ____________g [3]

(ii) The mass of mass sodium chloride crystals; NaCl, used to coat the tablet.

_________ g[2]

(iii). Calculate the percentage by mass of zinc carbonate in the tablet.

………………..% [2]

(b). Zinc carbonate can be replaced by Calcium carbonate. Calcium carbonate; CaCO 3, and
magnesium; MgCO3, are prepared by reacting calcium metal and magnesium metal with dilute
carbonic acid; H2CO3 respectively.

Reaction A: Ca + H2CO3 CaCO3 + H2

Reaction B: Mg + H2CO3 MgCO3 + H2

Which reaction; Reaction A or Reaction B will be faster under the same conditions?

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Explain your answer.

3 Some reaction equations are shown.

A. Cl2 + 2KI 2KCl + I2
B. 2Mg + O2 2MgO
C. CH4 + Cl2 CH3Cl + HCl
D. 6HCl + 2Fe 2FeCl3 + 3H2
E. H2 + O2 2H2O
F. HCl + Mg MgCl2 + H2
G. 2K + 2H2O 2KOH + H2

Use the equations to answer questions that follow.

Each equation may be used once, more than once or not at all.
Give the letter, A to G, for equation(s) which represent:
(a). a displacement reaction involving halogens _____________________
(b). an equation which is not balanced ______________________________
(c). reactions which involve only covalently bonded reactants and products ________
(d). a reaction which produced a coloured compound and a gas _________________
(e). a reaction which produced a flame. __________________________________[5]
