Q.1. Garbage to them is gold. Why does the author say so about the rag pickers?

For the rag pickers of Seemapuri , garbage is nothing less than gold. It is a means of their
existence. It is their daily bread. Whatever valuable they find in the heap of garbage provides
them money for their survival. For the children garbage is wrapped in wonder but for the adults
it is only a means for their livelihood.

Q.2. Describe the irony in Saheb’s name.

Saheb’s full name is Saheb-a-Alam, which means ‘Lord of the Universe’. But Saheb is a rag
picker and his existence depends upon the garbage. Whatever valuable he finds in the heap of
the garbage provides him, his means of survival. Hence it is ironical that a barefoot rag picker is
called Saheb-a-Alam.

Q.3. Seemapuri is a place on the periphery of Delhi, yet miles away from it. Illustrate.
Seemapuri is a settlement of thousands of rag pickers, who migrated there from Bangladesh .
These settlers live there without even the basic amenities of life. It is on the periphery of Delhi
.The people of Seemapuri live in sub-human condition whereas in nearby Delhi people enjoy all
the basic amenities of life. So it is difficult to believe that such a little hell can exist adjacent to
such a well- developed city, like Delhi.

Q.4. food is more important for survival than an identity for the rag pickers. Do you agree?

Anees Jung says that thousands of rag pickers live in Seemapuri without an identity. They are
squatters from Bangladesh. They left their motherland in search of a job that can provide them
food for their survival. Where ever they find food they pitch their tent and stay there. For them
food is more important than an identity.

Q.5. How does Saheb feel working in a tea stall?

Saheb starts working in a tea stall and earns 800 rupees and all his meals. But Saheb is no
longer his own master, When he was a rag picker he was free to do whatever he liked to do. But
now he works under someone and can’t do anything at his will. The author says that the
canister he carries now is heavier than the plastic bag he used to carry earlier and seems to be
unhappy at his new vocation.

Q.6. Who is Mukesh and what is his dream?

Mukesh belongs to a family of bangle workers in Firozabad. He wants to deviate from the
ancestral profession of bangle making. He has new dreams and unlike others he wants to be his
own master. `Hence he thinks of becoming a motor mechanic and wants to start his own
garage. Anees Jung is happy to know that there are people like Mukesh, who wants their own
independent business.

q.7. “Little has moved in Firozabad,” says Anees Jung. Why does she says so?

Anees Jung says that there has no improvement in the lives of the poor bangle makers of
Firozabad. The bangle makers still work under unhygienic and hazardous circumstances. They
have no eye-shields to protect their eyes and work in small dark rooms without ventilation or
light. As a result many of them become blind at a young age itself. Moreover they are
constantly exploited by moneylenders, police personals, politicians\, middlemen and people in
power.

Q.8. Why does the author say that the bangle makers are caught in a vicious web?

The bangle makers of Firozabad are constantly exploited by money lenders, police personals,
politicians and other people in power. They have lost all their ability to oppose these people
because of their circumstances. They are afraid that if they oppose these exploiters, false cases
would be fabricated against them and they would be dragged to jail. They are unable to
organize themselves and form co-operatives because of this vicious circle of those exploiters .
