Introduction to Measurement Systems Analysis
(MSA)
Here we see a bridge collapsing, people often ask
WRONG MEASUREMENT ? whether this was a miscalculation or measurement error?
So when the product doesn't match the spec, there are 2
possibilities that happen, namely because of a process
error or a measurement error, but often people rarely see
the measurements but what they see is a process error, ...
that's why we study this MSA

OR MISCALCULATION ??
What is Measurement System Analysis (MSA) ?

Good afternoon, today we will learn about measurement

MSA is defined as an experimental and mathematical
statistics, the topic we will discuss this time is about the concept, method for determining the amount of variation that
namely MSA, which is one of the analysis tools, in this case
measurement, many say it is very complicated because there
exists in a measurement process. Variations in the
are many difficult calculations, but today I will talk conceptually measurement process can directly contribute to overall
because if we learn something we have to be strong in
concepts, not strong in calculations, because when calculating
process variability. MSA is used to certify measurement
we can use software, we just enter the data and then the results systems for use by evaluating the system's accuracy,
come out. Therefore, I always emphasize that when studying,
we must really understand the concept. So that when we use
precision, and stability.
the tools, we will get better results.

What is a Measurement System?

A measurement system has been described as a system of related measurements

that allows the quantification of certain characteristics. The system may also include
the collection of measuring tools, equipment, software, and personnel necessary to
validate a particular unit of measurement or make an assessment of the feature or
characteristic being measured.

Sources of variation in the measurement process can include the following:

1. Process – test methods, specifications
2. Personnel – operators, skill level, training, etc.
3. Equipment / Tools – measuring instruments, fixtures, test equipment used and
associated calibration systems
4. Things to be measured – parts or samples of material to be measured, sampling
plan, etc.
5. Environmental factors – temperature, humidity, etc.

Why Perform a Measurement System Analysis (MSA) ?

An effective MSA process can help ensure that the data collected is accurate and that the data
collection system conforms to the process. Reliable and good data can prevent waste of time, labor
and used goods in the production process. A large manufacturing company began receiving calls
from some of their customers reporting nonconforming materials received at their facility locations.
The parts do not fit properly to form a flat surface or do not lock into place. The process was audited
and it was found that the parts were manufactured outside specifications. The operator follows the
inspection plan and uses the assigned gauge for the inspection. The problem is that the gauge does
not have sufficient resolution to detect non-conforming parts. An ineffective measuring system can
cause bad parts to be accepted and good parts to be rejected, resulting in dissatisfied customers
and excessive scrap. MSA can prevent such problems and ensure that useful and accurate data is
being collected.

Conclusion: The correct one depends on the quality of the measurement results,
deviating measurement results can result in errors in making decisions.
MSA Concept Comprehension
Can the measurement result be exactly the same
as the actual size of the object?

It is very rare that the measurement result

Variations in Measurement Results
is exactly the same as the size of the
object
