PSP & Hydro power are key enabling resources
for integration of intermittent RE resources,
Energy Storage, the backbone of renewable
energy, will not just complement renewables
but define the success of the green Energy.
Hydro & PSP:
Driving Green
Power Balancing need of energy, induced out of the
integration of large-scale RE, is considered as
fourth pillar of energy transition that will be
fulfilled by hydro and Energy storage system
which eventually will enhance the power trading
and energy exchange business in the BBIN
region
Energy storage now stands as a critical enabler
of 24x7 renewable power, stabilizing grid,
reducing fossil fuel dependence, and
accelerating decarbonization.

Areas of
promise By bridging the intermittency of solar and wind
power, storge systems have redefined the global
(Opportunities) energy landscape and emerge as a game
for Hydro & PSP changer in achieving net-zero goals.

In general, energy storage can be deployed

much faster, have much faster response times
and higher uptime , making them a key piece
not just for environment, but for stable, reliable
power.
Pumped hydro excels at long discharge
duration. Its high-power capacity will be crucial
in avoiding RE curtailment reducing

promise
(Opportunities)
Pumped storage hydro enjoys several distinct
for Hydro & PSP advantages over other forms of energy storage
due to its long asset life, low life time cost and
independent of raw materials.
Substantial uncertainties and delay in approval process

Exorbitant premium expectations from stakeholders states/

countries, makes the project unviable. Realistic expectations would
be key to make the hydro projects viable
Key
Impediment in Long construction (Gestation) period of large power plants
development of
Hydro & PSP
Moderate public awareness of the benefits of Hydropower & PSP
leading to obstruction in implementation

Socio-Environmental impact associated with the construction of new

high Dams, demands significant and costly mitigation measures
Engage communities early to identify benefits from projects.

Establish a multi-stakeholder task force to engage local

communities.

Support community-based programs and workforce development.

Key Mitigation
in Ensures that PSH maintains its cost-competitiveness as battery
Hydro and PSP technology advances, its cost will reduce.

Development The flexibility & storage services provided by pumped storage hydro
power are required to be adequately valued.

Financial & market mechanism to reward reliability, flexibility and

storage to be made robust.
A long-term policy framework that will give developers assurances
about the cost, stability and market sustainability for investments in
large projects in pipeline.
Since hydropower and PSP will be crucial in
facilitating the integration of RE and providing
firm energy, their importance must be
acknowledged in policymakers' Net-Zero
initiatives.

Required Policy Investment in Hydropower is (required to be)

Intervention incentivized through financial mechanism.

Streamline licensing/ clearance/approval process.

The availability of complementary generation
resources, enabling power systems and power
trading infrastructure between the BBIN
countries gives an opportunity to address the
VER induced balancing power requirement
through effective use of seasonal
complementarities and optimum exploitation
of untapped hydro potential of these countries.
Conclusion

Expect this conference to trigger some sound

ideas to enhance the hydro power development
for balancing & trading which can be shared
with the policy makers and other stakeholders
of BBIN countries for implementation.
