Engineering Material Specification: Not To Be Used For New Design
Engineering Material Specification: Not To Be Used For New Design
1. SCOPE
The purpose of this document is to harmonize VIEQ requirements within Ford Motor Company, and to
document guidelines pertaining to certain materials with regards to Odour, Fogging and the emission of
Formaldehyde and Volatile Organic Carbon Compounds (VOC's). In addition are listed the requirements
for allergy testing of materials which have direct skin contact with the vehicle occupants and
requirements for exterior air filtration.
2 APPLICATION
The requirements established by this Standard apply to all products supplied to Ford and assembled
into the cabin space and or air conditioning system. They apply equally to Full Service Suppliers,
Proprietary (black box), and Ford specified items.
References to "Ford" within this document shall be understood to include any Ford designated vehicle
platforms.
3. REQUIREMENTS
The primary intent of this Standard is to control emissions from materials and formed articles used in the
passenger cabin, load space and air filtration system. Conformance to these requirements must be
completed prior to supply of product to Ford. Details of any brand-specific direction and this process can
be obtained by contacting the appropriate regional Materials Engineering office (see Appendix 4).
Materials suppliers and part producers must conform to Company's Standard Requirements for
Production Materials (WSS-M99P1111-A).

Test procedure:
The test procedure is described in detail in the proDERM standard protocol V06 (05-ECT). The
test materials are to be applied for 24 hours to the skin on the back of the test persons with the
help of the Transpore® Carrier Mask and the occlusive plaster/band aid. The carrier mask
remains on the skin up until the end of the study. The first visual assessment takes place 15
minutes after removal of the test material. The second and/or third evaluations were carried out
48 and 72 hours after the application. The visual assessment is to be undertaken by means of a
standard assessment scale. This evaluation procedure stands in accordance with the COLIPA
guidelines (Cosmetic Product Test Guidelines for the Assessment of Human Skin Compatibility,
COLIPA, 1995).
www.colipa.com Guidelines for the Assessment of Skin Tolerance of Potentially Irritant Cosmetic
Ingredients
The filter is tested in a test duct according DIN 71460 part 1 at a flow rate of 300 m³/h.
Air containing a standardized test dust concentration is drawn through the filter. The
particle concentration in the filter outlet is measured by a particle counter. The following
collection efficiency shall be fulfilled:
By an additional test the filter system has to proof the same collection efficiency in a
measurement using real pollen.
The target can be solved by using, for instance, a Combined Gas and Particle filter. To
prevent the occupants from high concentrations of particles and gases. Exterior smell is
also to be minimised.
WSS-M99P2222 – B1/B2/B3/B4
For testing with Sodium Chloride: The NaCl concentration used in the
atomizer (range: 1-10%) shall be provided. The efficiency is calculated as
arithmetic mean of the efficiency at particle mobility diameters 0.03, 0.1 and
0.4 µm. The particle fractional efficiency curve (measured by SMPS, for
example) shall be provided.
Particle Fractional Filtration Efficiency at 80 l/s over filter lifetime 30000km / 1 year EU markets.
WSS-M99P2222 – B1/B2/B3/B4
The efficiency must be equal or better during the whole service interval:
Efficiency, Gases at 50 l/s (22°C ± 1°C / 50% RH ± 2%) and concentration 80 ppm. NO2 Test condition:
According to DIN 72460 part 2, conc. 30 ppm.
New filter Requirement:
n-Butane >=90%
Toluene >=90%
NO2 >=95% (30 ppm)
Requirement:
Toluene >= 50 g
n-Butane >= 8 g
Odour:
Requirement:
Odour from ambient air must not be perceived as annoying for the customer.
Risk of odour from HVAC system must be addressed when designing the Air Quality System.
Recirculated air should be filtered.
The maximum allowable value of the air coming from the HVAC is ≤ 3 according to FLTM BO131-03..
The filter may not produce any odours. All materials used in the filter cassette must have a rating ≤ 2
according to FLTM BO131-03.
Test Method:
• After operating the HVAC with the filter installed for 5 hours the system must be free of
unpleasant odours as rated in FLTM BO131-03.
• Test of filter/materials according to FLTM BO131-03.
Filter Lifetime:
Airflow reduction:
Max 20% airflow reduction in VENT mode, max blower, Tempset: MIN.
This requirement is to be fulfilled at end of lifetime.
The airflow reduction shall be demonstrated with the filter loaded with 15g SAE fine / A2 (ISO 12103-1).
--`,,,,`,,,``````,,,`,,`,,`,,```-`-`,,`,,`,`,,`---
WSS-M99P2222 – B1/B2/B3/B4
Test Method:
The filter shall be loaded according to DIN 71460 part 1 at 80 l/s with test dust SAE fine / A2 (ISO
12103-1). For the air flow reduction the filter needs to be mounted in the HVAC including air ducts.
Base level
The target is to fulfil the level of good air quality defined by EU, WHO and AAF during the whole lifetime
of the filter. This can be solved by using for instance a Gas- and Particle filter system (14.1)
The air quality levels listed below are to be fulfilled during 15 minutes (average) driving in all normal
conditions, which is city driving, highway driving, traffic jam, and rural driving in normal climate
conditions.
WHO Air quality Guideline (Base level In-cabin Air quality guideline) (to be fulfilled in cabin):
Advanced level
The target is to outperform the level of good air quality defined by EU, WHO and AAF during the whole
lifetime of the filter. This can be solved by using for instance an advanced Gas- and Particle filter system

(14.2).
The air quality levels listed below are to be fulfilled during 15 minutes (average) driving in all normal

APPENDIX 2
Before the measurement the car is conditioned in a climatic chamber at 21 ± 2°C for at least 8 h. A sampling
tube is installed at the driver's nose position and all windows and doors are closed. During the interior air
sampling a temperature of 21 ± 2°C is maintained. The sampling time is 30 minutes. The measurement takes
place without any air exchange.
By this procedure the mean VOC concentration is determined a passenger is exposed to in a closed car during
the first 30 min after entering the car. According to practical observations after 30 min passengers would at least
partly open the windows or switch on the fan in order to breathe fresh air and to reduce the carbon dioxide
concentration in the interior air
The conditioning and sampling temperatures against time are monitored by a data logger.
The air in the test chamber outside the car is measured simultaneously in order to determine the blank values of
VOC components.
A second measurement is done after driving the car for 30 min in order to detect volatile organic compounds
which might be released by the warm motor and contaminate the interior air through leaks in gaskets and seals.
In connection with both measurements the odour of the interior air is documented. Only a weak product typical
odour is tolerated.
All concentrations of compounds in the interior air corrected by the blank values must keep the limits of
Clause 3.6.
