SAP Master Data Governance Principles
SAP Master Data Governance Principles are:
➢ User-Centricity Principle:
▪ All the activities around the creation and maintenance of objects are together in one place. Companies can set it
up as a standard center Creating and changing objects. Customers can use SAP Business Client Home or Fiori
Launchpad (S/4HANA only).
▪ Central deployment and authorization ensures governance.

➢ Governance Principle:
▪ This function allows you to implement a comprehensive process of master data administration starting with a
request to create or change an object, Continues with processing and commenting by different expert users and
stakeholders and concludes with approval or rejection by the authority Experts.
▪ All processing steps are supported by workflow.
SAP Master Data Governance Principles
SAP Master Data Governance Principles are:
➢ Workflow Principle:
▪ The data maintenance activities are bundled via a change request that is linked to a workflow. The workflow can
be linear or distributed. Besides automated steps, ad hoc steps, delegation etc. can be used. The standard SAP
Business Workflow is enhanced with a rule-based engine (Workflow template WS60800086); therefore changes
in responsibilities and in processes can be reflected immediately and with ease. There is also a workflow
template WS46000057 without BRF+, which covers the same processes.
▪ The combination of generic workflow template with the BRFplus decision tables allows you to easily set up
many different processes that can be flexibly changed through Customizing.

➢ Architecture Principle:
▪ As long as the change request for the creation or change of a material is in progress, the attributes of the
material are stored in an inactive version that exists (in the case of a change) in parallel to the active version.
When the change request is approved, the data is then written as the active version to the master data tables
and this new or updated record is then available for business processes.
SAP Master Data Governance Principles
SAP Master Data Governance Principles are:
➢ Architecture Principle:
▪ Handling of Active and Inactive Data

❖To enable the master data governance process, MDG separates data as follows:
• Active data – Ready to be used by applications, can be distributed to client systems.
• Inactive data – Not yet approved, currently part of a change request.

❖Accordingly there are two separate storage locations:

• Active area – Holds the active data.
• Staging area – Holds the data during the change request processing before approval
SAP Master Data Governance Principles
➢ Architecture Principle:
▪ Handling of Active and Inactive Data
❖For optimal integration, MDG allows two modes:
• Generated active area (flex mode): Tables as defined in the MDG data model are used to store
active data
• Reuse active area (reuse mode):Existing application structures are used. E.g. MDG for material
use of the MARA table.
Deployment Options in SAP MDG
SAP Master Data Governance Deployment options are:
➢ MDG Co-Deployment:
▪ When MDG software is installed in an "operational ECC system" this is known as MDG Co-deployment.
▪ When MDG software installed on ECC/S4 system and CR is created and submitted, data will be available in
inactive/active version of MDG staging area. Once CR is validated and approved, data will be replicated from
inactive/active version of MDG staging area to active area of ECC/S4 HANA.
Deployment Options in SAP MDG
SAP Master Data Governance Deployment options are:
➢ MDG Hub Deployment:
▪ When MDG software is installed in a new instances and replicate master data to operational system this
is known as MDG Hub deployment.
▪ Initially data will be loaded through BODS or other form of tools from operational system to MDG S4
HANA/ECC, later governance will happen and then data will be moved to operational system.
▪ In this case when MDG software installed on ECC/S4 system, basic data, org data, master data from
operation system will be moved to MDG ECC/S4 system for governance process. When CR is created
and submitted, data will be available in inactive/active version of MDG staging area. Once CR is
validated and approved, data will be replicated from inactive/active version of MDG staging area to
active area of MDG ECC/S4 HANA system. If we want to use the data, we have to replicate data from
MDG ECC/S4 system to active area of operational ECC/S4 HANA system.

 Note:- Operational system is nothing where all business process/financial transactions posted towards
master data, that system is known as Operational system (Production system).
