Synchronous Reluctance Motors Questions

• How to reverse the direction of single-phase synchronous reluctance motor

(SynRM)? (My opinion)
- Reverse voltage on one winding (Main or Auxiliary Winding)
• Single phase SynRM starts as a single-phase or two-phase motor?
- Start as 2 phase until speed reach 75% of synchronous speed. Then the Centrifugal
switch will disconnect Auxiliary winding
• Highlight the significance of double revolving field theory in single phase SynRM.
- Current in main winding will produce pulsating magnetic field. That consists from
forward field and backward field. They are equal in value and different in direction
- if motor start with main winding only. The total torque equal (|Tf| – |TB|) = zero
- But if motor is rotating. One of fields will be greater than other one (|Tf|–|TB|) ≠ 0
. So motor will continue rotating

• Which has higher windage losses: Induction motor or SynRM?

Windage increase with Salient rotors
- SynRM: Salient Rotor. But Induction motor: Rotary Rotor
- SynRM windage > Induction motor windage
• What is reluctance torque?
- It is produced due to the varying reluctance between Salient rotor and stator.
- when ferromagnetic object (Rotor Salient pole) placed in an external magnetic field
(Stator), which causes the object to line up with the external magnetic field. An
external magnetic field induces an internal magnetic field in the object and because
of this torque is produced.
• Explain the operation principle of centrifugal switch.
- When speed less than 75% of synchronous speed. the Switch will be still closed.
But when speed excess this value. The switch will open the auxiliary winding circuit
• Plot the power-load angle characteristics of single-phase SynRM.

• What are the advantages and disadvantages of single-phase SynRM?

Advantages:
1- Simple in construction (no slip rings, no brushes, and no dc field winding)
2- Low cost
3- Maintenance-free operation
4- Low inertia
Disadvantages:
1- Low power-factor
2- In the absence of the dc field excitation, the maximum torque is greatly
reduced. Therefore, a reluctance motor is several times larger than a
synchronous motor having the same horse-power and speed rating
• What are the applications of single-phase SynRM?
- Low power and constant speed applications such as: clocks, timers and turntables
• Is the maximum load angle in synchronous motor different from single-phase
SynRM?
- Yes, max (synchronous motor) = 90o . But max (single-phase SynRM) = 45o
