In this article we will tackle the way a teacher deals with a listening lesson.

It’s done as a
PDP (pre-listening, during listening and post-listening)
The objective: My learners will be able to act out dialogues
to ask about the price and the quantity while shopping.(How
much and how many)(part1)
The lead in:
The teacher starts the lesson by using “GUESS WHAT!” game.
The teacher sticks pictures of fruits and vegetables face down , then he uses riddles , pupils
have to guess the fruits and the vegetables.
Examples:
I am a fruit , I am good for the flu , I make delicious juice . I start with the letter O, What am I?
It’s the Orange.

I am a vegetable, I’m brown and I make delicious puree, I start with the letter p, what am I?

It’s a Potato.
I am a fruit, I am yellow, I’m full of potassium and the monkey loves me, I start with the letter
B, what am I?
It’s a banana.
Pre-listening:
When we finish the revision of fruits and vegetables, the teacher pins the flashcard of Omar,
then he sticks another flashcards that represent new family members(Omar’s uncle , aunt and
cousins)
Learning situation:
(aims at putting learners in a real life problem solving
situation)
Omar’s family is inviting some family members for a Friday dinner .His mother needs some
ingredients to prepare the meal (couscous, green salad and dessert) so he goes shopping with
his father. They stop by the greengrocer to buy fruits and vegetables .

the teacher asks learners, what do Omar and his father need to go shopping?
Pupils may answer;a shopping bag or basket , money ,and a shopping list.
During listening:
Task1: I listen to the conversation then I complete the shopping list in order:

4. ………………………
5.courgettes.

I use the flashcards and I match each fruit or vegetable with the right number to make sure
that slow learners understand the meaning of all items.

post-listening:
Task3 : I use the vocabulary I learnt in task 1 and 2 to complete the conversation.
Omar and his father are at the greengrocer shop.
Father: Good morning .
Greengrocer : Good morning, sir .How can I help you?
Father:we’d like some……….. and …………….
Greengrocer: What …………………. do you want?
Father : I want some ……..,………..,onions,…
…,……….. and pumpkin.
Greengrocer : How many kilos do you want from each?
Father: one kilo each.
Greengrocer: and how about fruits?
Father: Give me half a kilo of grapes ,……….,…………… and peaches.
Greengrocer: Anything else?
Father : Give me a second ,let me check the list. That’s all . How much do I owe you?
Greengrocer: 950 DA, sir.

I act out the conversation with my partner.


The teacher uses real fruits and vegetables , puts them on the desk and each time invites a
couple to act out the conversation at the green grocer shop.
The listening script(part1)
Mum: We are inviting your uncle and aunt for dinner today.
Omar: Yes, that’s great , I love meeting my cousins.
Mum: But you have to go shopping with your father , take a paper and write the list of the
ingredients that I need.
Omar: ok, here we go.
Mum: For the starter , I will prepare green salad and for the main course I will prepare
couscous so I need one kilo of lettuce , carrots ,cucumber ,tomatoes , courgettes ,
pumpkin ,potatoes ,onion and garlic.
Omar: Ok , what about dessert?
Mum: We already have bananas so you can buy some grapes , peaches, apples and dates. Are
you taking notes?
Omar: Yes, mum .Is that all?
Mum :yes , hurry up ,you have t go to the green grocer now , if I remember anything I will call
your father.
