CHAPTER I
Introduction:

Choosing and deciding on something have consequences. The results of what you have chosen

can either help you, or it will hinder your plan in the future. It also the same with the strand that you

will have to decide. Making decision implies that there are factor/s to be considered, and in such case

we want only to identify as many of these alternatives as possible but to choose the one that best fits

with our goals, objectives, desires, values and so on.

The researchers have chosen this study because they want to know the factors that affect student

decision in choosing track in Senior High School.

The researchers believe that this research possessed novelty in a way that other people

specifically Grade 10 students realize the importance of knowing what strand they like the most.

Sooner or later their senior high school journey will start and hopefully on that time they will know

what strand is appropriate for their skills and talents.

Statement of the Problem

This study aims to answer different questions:

1. What are the factors that influence a Grade 10 students in choosing his/her strand in Senior High

School?

CHAPTER II
Review and Related Literature

The present study necessitate a review of related literature and studies. The researcher

believes that making a review of previous studies, which have direct bearing to the present

investigation; a better understanding of the problem under the study may be gained.

Local Literature:

The K-12 program offers a decongested 12-year program that gives students sufficient time to

master skills and absorb basic competencies (K-12 Philippines, 2015).

Factors that influence the choice of specialization of students

(Future Opportunities/ Ideal Job)

Opportunity may influence how students have perceived their future in terms of the

reasonable probability of a future in particular career fields.

(Personality)

“Personality” plays an important role in the choosing of the right career (Splaver,2000)

(Family)

Parental support and encouragement are important factors that have been found to

influence career choice (Taylor et al, 2004).

(Peer/Classmate)

External influences that help to shape an individual’s career choice are also influenced by

significant others through social support from peers. People around contribute a lot in one’s decision-

making (Pummel, Harwood and Lavallee ,2008).

3

Foreign Literature:

(Personality)

There has been a lot of talk whether or not passion is the sole way for choosing an individual’s

career path. But there are other significant factors that can influence the career path, not just passion.

Several recent studies shows that understanding the personality the individual’s own traits and

characteristics, rather than passion, are a key to career fulfillment and success.

An article posted by Adecco UK (Adecco UK, 2015), a part of a Swiss multinational human

resource consulting company of the same name, states that it is worth finding out what type of worker

an individual is with the increasing of employers utilizing personality and psychometric testing

procedures to analyze the employee’s attributes beyond qualifications. It is also stated in the article

that “choosing a job to which an individual is inherently suited –rather than just able to convince the

interviewer that he/she is interested in the position – will make him/her a happier, more productive

employee.”

There are many methods for assessing personality type, and the most common is the RIASEC

model of the psychologist John L. Holland (Holland,1973), which is developed from his theory which

postulates that people project self- and world-of-work views onto occupational titles and make career

decisions that satisfy their preferred personal orientations based on the premise that personally

factors. Holland model constitute of six basic personality types, namely: Realistic, Investigative,

Artistic, Social, Enterprising, and Conventional.

From the 6, the model provides the possibility of a 720 different personality patterns. The results will

show the tendencies of a person to lean towards a certain type of personality, which would provide a
list of careers that might suit the person best.

Another study that establishes the influence of personality on careerchoice is of Dr. Claudia

Harzer and companions of University of Zurich(Harzer, et.al, 2012), which focuses on the character

strengths of an individual and how it affects their career. From interviews of over 1,000 working

people, their study shows that the degree of positive experiences increases with the number of

personal character strengths, or so-called “signature strengths", applied at work. This would imply

that understanding what roles a person are best suited to based on his/her personality is what will

make him/her the most happy at work.

(Interests)

It is important for students to have a good understanding of themselves, their personality, if they

are to make intelligent career plans. What they would like to be, and what they are like, is determining

factors in their career. The personality factors to be considered include their mental abilities, special

abilities and interest, (Slaver, 1977, p13). Considered factors of mental abilities to verbal

comprehension, word fluency, spatial ability, numerical ability, reasoning ability, and memory. Slaver

matched careers with abilities in backing up her, reasoning. Students become familiar with their

personality in order to guide their career choice. A developed career plan included evaluation of

personality through self assessment, and communication with others another trait that depended

heavily on personality, according to Harris and Jones (1997).

There have been numerous career clusters, as well as clashers that coincide with abilities. The

students should become knowledgeable in these areas while searching for career interests.

Personality has been a tough quality for parents and teachers to mold into the individual especially if

the career in question is not in agreement with student. In addition contacts are major job seeking

method. The student's personality must match the criteria for their chosen career. Personality is
defined as the collection or impressions in the appearance of the student's body and the impression

believed to have been made on others good.

(Aptitude)

When choosing a career you should also take your own abilities into consideration. For example, if

you do not perform well in an academic setting, it would be best hierarchical occupations where

continuing education is essential to success. Seek a career that will maximize your strengths and

minimize your weaknesses.

Everyone has unique talents that can be used in a career of some type. For many, these talents

have been present since childhood; for others they are learned over time. Skills can be broken down

by types and matched up with specific career paths. In order to determine what career you should

choose, begin by looking at skills that can be used on the job or look at career paths that compliment

your current skills and talents.

Considering your skills and how they may fit a particular occupation comes out of one of the

earliest career development fields, trait-factor theories, and is still used today. These theories

recommend creating occupational profiles for specific jobs as well as identifying individual

differences, matching individuals to occupations based on these differences. You can identify

activities you enjoy and those in which you have a level of competency though a formal assessment.

In John Holland's Theory of Vocational Choice, he stated that people who choose to work in an

environment compatible to their personality type are more likely to be satisfied successful in the

future. He also identified that there are six personality types: Realistic, Investigative, Artistic, Social,

Enterprising, and Conventional. Also there are six basic types of work environments that come hand

in hand with each personality type. The theory is based from the phrase, "Birds of the same feather

flock together". which means that people are more likely to choose a career path in an environment
which is suitable to their personalities and to work with people who are more similar to them.

(Holland, 1995) It shows that the personality of each Grade 10 students can affect their choice in their

career. Everyone has unique talents that can be used in a career of some type. For many, these

talents have been present since childhood; for others they are learned over time. Skills can be broken

down by typed and matched up with specific career paths. In order to determine what career you

should choose, begin by looking at skills that can be used on the job or look at career paths that

compliment your current skills and talents. Also, with the theory of Lent, Brown and Hackett which is

The Social Cognitive Career Theory. It states that there are influences in an individual's career choice

which connects to self-efficacy, outcome expectations and personal goals and on how these variables

interact with other aspects of the person and his or her environment (e.g., gender, ethnicity, social

supports, and barriers.) Also with Roe (1987), Adigwe (1981), Okeke (1996), Gensinde (1986) they

had said that parental influence has been implicated in the career choice of the children. Adding up

with Gensinde (1976) statement, that gender can play a big part in their career choice. Therefore, the

abovementioned factors affect the career choice of grade 10 students.

Job Opportunities

There are many opportunities that wait for every career that one wants to pursue. Some people

may stumble upon better occupation opportunities, thanks to the strategies and steps that they follow.

Investigating for career opportunities is well worth taking time (Mind Tools, 2014). By doing this, one

can discover opportunities that are perfectly matched to his/her interests or skills, find out about

promotions and job openings before anyone else, and identify ways of expanding the knowledge and

skills needed for that career.

Opportunities exist for schools to take greater advantage of the fact that their students are working

by integrating employment and school experiences to the benefit of adolescents’ vocational

development. Guidance counselors can play a key role in spearheading such efforts. Many youth
donor see their jobs as connected with their future work lives or as having any influence on their

occupational preferences. More can be done to develop internships and work-school cooperative

programs that might involve workplace visits or job shadowing, for example. Through such programs,

youth are exposed to the possibilities of working in particular kinds of settings; they can learn about

the requirements to fill certain kinds of jobs and do particular types of tasks (Hamilton & Hamilton,

2000).

Extracurricular activities are beneficial to a job hunt. A record of clubs and activities provides

evidence of leadership and the ability to work in-groups. The careers most suited for someone with

many extracurricular activities on her/his resume are sales, junior executive positions, and an

educational career. Work experience has been seen as the way a student demonstrates responsibility

and dependability. Those that are in the position to have the best contacts are students with parents

who hold supervisory or executive positions. Super stated that can be a hard fact to face, sometimes

it is not what one does know, but who does he know (Super, 1957). Schools and employment

services have played a huge role, therefore, in the social mobility of students entering the workforce.

Schools and employment agencies have matched the qualifications of the job to the education level

of the career seeker, using computers, and eliminating barriers of distance quite easily.

CHAPTER III

Research Design:

The Researcher of this study use quantitative method for their research design, they made

questionnaire which are made up of question that related in their study. They choose their

respondents to gather some information that needed in their research paper.

Population and Sampling:

As we mentioned, the study will be conducted to the Grade 10 students of Magallanes, Cavite.

However, the ratio was only 1:1. One from the private institution, which is the De Guia Academy, the

other one was the Bendita National High School representing the public institution. The total

respondents was 194. but the researcher encounter a respondent that was out of the topic, 1 out of

194 student will be joining the tech-voc track, the data that has been collected in tech-voc aspirant will

not be interpreted.

Instrumentation & Validation

The Researchers use questionnaires as their instrument for their study, this questionnaires was

made up of question that possess novelty, this was formulated by the Researchers, their answer will

be easily acknowledged by the Researcher through the questionnaires. Lastly they calculated their

questionnaires by using basic math calculation that can help them to gather the data that needed in

their said study.

9

Data Gathering

First the Researchers of this study think a interesting topic that they're going to make a study.

After nth brainstorming session they finally pick a topic and that is "Factor/s that affect the Grade 10

students in choosing strand in Senior High" . They gathered some data needed in their study through

reading some article, blog, and other research paper with the same matter/s . After that, they made

questionnaire and conducted the survey to the chosen respondents. Then the Researchers organize

the answer of the respondents and has been analyzed properly. Upon analyzing it, they found out

that there are factor/s that really affect the Grade 10 students in choosing their strand from the both

school.

CHAPTER V

Conclusion:

Therefore the researchers conclude that the given hypothesis was proven right. There are factors

affecting the students in choosing their strands in senior high school. Based on the survey, the top

three factors affecting the students in choosing their strand in senior high school are personal choice,

capabilities, and Family background.

Recommendation:

From the findings and conclusions of the study, the following recommendations are hereby

presented. For the students, the researchers know that you encounter some factor/s that affects what

strand are you going to take. We advise you to follow what your heart say. For the parents,
pressuring your child about what strand they are going to take can be a factor that can affect his/her

choice. The best thing that you can do is to guide & support them on what strand would fit in, on

what course are they going to take. For Guidance Counselor, conducting some personal talk about

what or who are they, what are the skills and capabilities that they can enlighten the students mind.

In that way they can help the students on what strand will suit them. For Teachers, helping your

student in living their dream is best, but guiding them to be successful someday is beyond perfect.
