PROD ED ASS 2
1. Labeling the disability spotlights the problem for the public. Labeling can spark social concern
and aid advocacy efforts. When persons are labeled, advocacy groups now have an opportunity
to identify the problem and lobby for it on behalf of the individuals. In other words, Labeling
creates cohesive communication for advocacy groups.
2. Labeling may make the majority without disabilities more tolerant of the minority with
disabilities. Labeling provides the person without the disability an opportunity to research about
the condition and make them more tolerant of the person with the disability. This is so because
people are labeled based on their educational or medical diagnosis.
3. Labeling makes it easier for legislators to understand the need for laws protecting the rights of
individuals with disabilities. In cases where applicable, labeling allow legislators to see the
discrimination that persons with disabilities face thus, making legislators develop laws to
protects persons with disabilities.
1. Students cannot receive special education services until they are labeled. In many instances,
the intervention comes too late. Students with disabilities are at a disadvantage when they have
to wait to be labeled before, they can receive special education services. In essence, the need to
label students before help arrives undermines a preventive approach to mild learning problems.
2. Labels tend to focus on impairment and may encourage people to see the impairment instead
of the child. Often times when a child is labeled, the person without the disability focuses on the
child limitations and not their strength. The onlooker is forced not to look pass the disability,
while the real beauty is shoved aside by the label.
3. When a child is labeled, the blame and guilt is forced onto the shoulders of the parent. This
makes the parent feel as if their child is constantly discriminated and the parent eventually feels
that it is their fault. As a result, the parent may with draw the child from the wider society as a
means of protection.
4. Labels may result in lower expectations for the child than for peers. In some cases, the
moment a child is labeled, the expectation of the child is lowered. As a result of the child
disabilities, they are not expected to perform at a high standard as the rest of the class or their
peers in general.
ACTIVITY
For me, when you say “Special” it deals with a specific field of something, so the term
“special education" is referred to as an education with a special or particular way of teaching and
learning for learners in need of that special education.
ANALYSIS
Explain how the government promotes the education of children with special needs. On your own
understanding.
In my own understanding, every child has the right to the same opportunities as others,
regardless of the difficulties they face. Special education is of great importance for children with
learning disabilities because it gives them the opportunity to get quality education in line with
their unique needs. That’s why the government create Sped designed to meet the unique needs
of a child with a disability. This means education that is developed to address that child's specific
needs to achieve his or her highest learning potential.
The state, communities and families have a shared vision for Filipino children with
special needs. By the 21st century, it is estimated that he will be able to benefit from an
adequate basic education. This education must enable students to fully realize their own
potential for growth and productivity while also being able to express their rights in society. The
most important thing is that he/she loves God and is proud to be Filipino.
How to appreciate and gain inspiration from the lives of successful person with disabilities.
We should be thankful to God for giving us a such a brilliant and healthy body and mind
unlike those who suffers from a conditions and disabilities. Like Stephen Hawking, his disability
doesn’t affect his motivation to learn and discover theories in his field. Therefore, we should
learn from the greatness of those people and apply that knowledge in the future. We should live
our lives with satisfaction and live our lives to the fullest.
ACTIVITY
Explain in your own understanding what you seen in the picture. What kind of disabilities is this?
On the first picture, the child sitting on the wheelchair looks like he has an injury on his
leg maybe cause by an accident or a genetic disorder that causes his legs inoperative.
On the second picture, the child has a visual impairment and based on the child’s pupil
color, it is most likely Trachoma that is a disease of the eye caused by infection.
ANALYSIS
Compare and contrast the prevalence estimate of children with special needs by done by UNICEF
and the world health organization.
It depends on the child’s disability, but generally speaking, it is their adjustment to their
disabilities. For example, if a child has a hearing impairment, it’s hard to teach a child sign
language when they only depend on their visual to understand the world. I wonder how they
know how to pronounce each letter or the word in their mind.
For me, I will try my best to adjust, be friendly, and communicate to him/her like how
you communicate to your friends and family, so that they don’t feel any indifference to society.
Thus, The most important thing to remember when you interact with people with disabilities is
that they are people. Their disability is just one of the many characteristics they have. People
with disabilities have the same needs we all do: first and foremost among them is to be treated
with dignity and respect.
There is a need to educate a special child because they are learners in need for a special
education. Regardless of impairments, with the right approach, the child will not be excluded
and alienated, but will have a fulfilling social life. A better understanding of their disability by
other children will lead to their acceptance as equal members of the community.
