Discussion
Organizational Culture, Norms & Values
"Organizational culture" refers to a company's purpose, objectives,
expectations, and values for its employees. Culture influences how
employees are expected to behave in a workplace. By using several
methods, leaders may communicate these values to employees, who in turn
affect their behaviors and attitudes.

9
It establishes the social norms and standards of conduct within the
organization and shapes how employees interact with one another,
customers, and their surroundings. Cultural norms and values are society's
expectations reflected in the attitudes and behaviors of groups of people. A
norm refers to the attitudes and behaviors that are considered typical or
average for a social group while beliefs are often referred to as values.
Profession and its characteristics
Clear purpose and direction
A clear purpose and direction align the organization’s efforts and goals. This
clarity helps unite the team, focusing their efforts on achieving specific
objectives and guiding strategic planning and daily operations.

Transparent and regular communication

Transparent and regular communication supports openly sharing information
and feedback throughout the organization. This practice fosters trust, helps
in early identification of issues, encourages collaboration, and ensures that
everyone is informed and aligned with the organization’s goals.

Collaboration and teamwork

Collaboration and teamwork underpin a cooperative environment where
groups work together to achieve collective objectives. This approach
enhances problem-solving, innovation, and efficiency, while also building a
supportive work environment.

Active involvement and commitment

Employees are actively involved and committed to their work and the
organization’s success. When employees are engaged and committed, they
are more productive, contribute ideas, and take initiative, driving the
organization forward.

Opportunities for growth

Opportunities for growth refer to the avenues provided by an organization for
personal and professional development. This includes training
programs, mentorship, career advancement paths, and learning resources.
Such opportunities increase employee satisfaction, competency, and
retention.

10
Moral Responsibilities in Computing
The people who design, develop, or deploy a computing artifact are morally
responsible for that artifact, and for the foreseeable effects of that artifact.
This responsibility is shared with other people who design, develop, deploy
or knowingly use the artifact as part of a sociotechnical system.

Impact of technology in ethical code and conduct

1. Improved Credibility
An organization develops a positive reputation when it is recognized for its
dedication to moral conduct and ethical business methods. This reputation
may draw clients, partners, and customers that appreciate moral behavior,
which could result in more business prospects and growth.

2. Enhanced Faith
Employer ethics foster trust with the public, shareholders, consumers, and
employees. Stakeholders are more inclined to interact with, support, and
invest in an organization when they have faith in it.

3. Higher Staff Morale and Retention

Employee morale and job satisfaction are more common in ethical
firms. Employees are more inclined to stick with a company that
treats them fairly, honors their opinions, and offers career
advancement possibilities.

4. Enhanced Efficiency
An ethical workplace environment can enhance employee motivation and
engagement. Employees that are engaged are frequently more creative and
productive, which helps the company succeed.

5. Increased Recruitment
Top talent frequently gravitates toward companies that have a strong
commitment to workplace ethics. Talented people are more inclined to join
and stay with businesses that share their own moral principles.

6. Reduced Legal and Regulatory Risks

The risk of expensive legal challenges and regulatory fines is reduced when
firms act ethically and in compliance with laws and regulations. Ethical

11
conduct can also lessen reputational harm that may be caused by legal
problems.

Advantages of a company code of ethics

#1. Sets the right culture to promote ethical behavior
The most important benefit of a code of ethics is that it can foster an
environment of trust, ethical behavior, integrity, and excellence. When
everyone, from the c-suite to the people at the very bottom, plays by the
same rules and behaves in a certain way toward one another, productivity
tends to grow as conflicts and confusions disappear from the workplace.

#2. Builds a good reputation

Today's customers look well beyond the price tag. With so many choices,
customers gravitate toward companies they feel they can trust, and they
stay far away from those companies that don't promote ethical behavior. But
it's not just customers to whom ethics matter. Companies that pay strong
attention to ethics also find it easier to establish lasting partnerships both
within and outside their industry.

#3. Helps remain in compliance with laws and

regulations
According to the landmark Sarbanes-Oxley Act of 2002, also known as the
Public Company Accounting Reform and Investor Protection Act, all
individuals serving on boards and organizational leaders of public companies
are required to have a code of ethics to make major corporate scandals like
Enron and WorldCom less likely to happen.

#4. Attracts outstanding employees

Outstanding employees come from all walks of life, and they all expect to be
treated justly and ethically. Companies with a code of ethics reassure
potential employees that they won't be discriminated against, sexually
harassed, intimidated, bullied, or subjected to any other type of workplace
harassment.

12
Ethical issues that company may face
1. Discrimination
One of the biggest ethical issues affecting the business world in 2020 is
discrimination. In the last few months, many corporations have come under
fire for lacking a diverse workforce, which is often down to discrimination.
However, discrimination can occur at businesses of all sizes. It applies to any
action that causes an employee to receive unequal treatment.
2. Harassment
The second major ethical issue businesses face is harassment, which is often
related to racism or sexism. This can come in the form of verbal abuse,
sexual abuse, teasing, racial slurs, or bullying. Harassment can come from
anyone in the company, as well as from customers. In particular, it is an
ethical issue for the business if a supervisor is aware of harassment from a
client and takes no action to prevent it.
3. Unethical Accounting
Publicly-traded companies may engage in unethical accounting to appear
more profitable than they actually are. In other cases, an accountant or
bookkeeper may change records to skim off the top.

4. Health and Safety

Another type of ethical issue that is often protected by law is health and
safety. Companies may decide to cut corners to reduce costs or perform
tasks faster. As well as injuries, failing to take workers’ safety into account
can lead to psychosocial risks (like job insecurity or lack of autonomy), which
can cause work-related stress.
5. Abuse of Leadership Authority
Abuse of power often manifests as harassment or discrimination. However,
those in a leadership role can also use their authority to pressure employees
to skip over some aspects of proper procedure to save time (potentially
putting the employee at risk), punish workers who are unable to meet
unreasonable goals, or ask for inappropriate favors.

14
Conclusion
A code of conduct serves as a vital framework that defines the expected
ethical behavior, responsibilities, and standards for individuals within an
organization. It promotes transparency, integrity, and accountability,
ensuring that everyone adheres to shared principles and organizational
values.
By fostering a respectful and inclusive environment, the code of conduct
helps mitigate conflicts, build trust among stakeholders, and enhance the
organization's reputation. When consistently followed, it creates a culture of
professionalism and ethical excellence, contributing to the long-term success
and sustainability of the organization.
