Types of Sentences

Introduction

• Sentences are the building blocks of language,


conveying meaning and ideas.
• They can be categorized based on their structure into:
• - Simple Sentences
• - Compound Sentences
• - Complex Sentences
Simple Sentences

• A simple sentence contains one independent clause.


• - It expresses a complete thought.
• - It has a subject and a predicate.

• Examples:
• 1. She reads books.
• 2. The sun shines brightly.
Compound Sentences

• A compound sentence contains two or more independent


clauses joined by:
• - Coordinating conjunctions (for, and, nor, but, or, yet,
so).
• - A semicolon (;).

• Examples:
• 1. I wanted to go for a walk, but it started raining.
• 2. She loves music; he prefers movies.
Complex Sentences

• A complex sentence contains one independent clause


and one or more dependent clauses.
• - Dependent clauses are introduced by subordinating
conjunctions (because, since, although, etc.).

• Examples:
• 1. Although she was tired, she finished her work.
• 2. I will go to the party if you come with me.
