Q4. Explain in your own words the following lines : (Explain any 1 out of 2) [Marks : 02]
1) “Strong and content I travel the open road.”
Ans- By these lines, the poet means to say that he is strong and satisfied to undertake the
journey of life on his own and without any one’s support.

2) “His shirt and pants are soggy and his black rain coat stained with mud.”
Ans- By these lines the poet describes the condition of his old father whose shirt and pants
are wet and old and his black rain coat is stained (spotted) with mud. He is described to
be travelling in such condition in the over-crowded train, standing all through his
journey.

3) A foot and light hearted I take to the open road,
Healthy, free the world before me.”
Ans- By these line the poet Walt Whitman means that he is ready, well prepared and happy to
undertake his journey of life on the free and healthy world like him.

4) “White as a feather and white as a cloud,


We weave a dead man’s funeral shroud.”
Ans- By these lines the poetess Sarojini Naidu means to explain the third phase of our cycle
of life. i.e death. The weavers answer the poetess that they are weaving the white cloth
to wrap up the dead body of the departed soul. White colour signifies that
at the end of our life we want peace and calmness.

5) “Then felt I like a child that holds.


A trumpet that he must not blow”
Ans- By these line the poet William Davies means to say that when he had money, he could
not tell the world that he had lots of money fearing that many false men (friends) would
take away his money, and therefore he compared himself with a child who had a musical
instrument to play and enjoy but he could not because of some reason.

6) “He felt the cheering power of spring,


It made him whistle, it made him sing.”
Ans- By these lines the poet Robert Southey describes the effect of bright sunny day on the
sir Ralph the Rover Like birds, sailors and all others , he was happy and whistling and
singing with everyone.

7) “Blue as the wing of a halcyon wild,


We weave the robes of a new-born child ”
Ans- By these lines the poetess Sarojini Naidu means to say that the cycle of life begins with
‘Birth’ and to welcome a new life we dress them up with blue, bright garment that
signifies life & hope.

8) “The waves flowed over the Inch cape Rock,


So little they rose, so little the fell.”
Ans- By these lines Robert Southey describes the bright sunny day. The waves in the sea rose
and fell so little due to mild wind that one could see very clearly the Inch Cape Rock and
the Inchcape Bell on the rock.

9) “Can you say tonight, in parting with the days that’s slipping fast,
That you helped a single brother of the many that you passed?”
Ans- By these lines the poet Edgar Guest interrogates us that have we done something good
or have we said some thing motivating for any needy or any sad person to reduce
their pain ,or grief ; without expecting any reward from them. If yes, then we are entitled
to earn our tomorrow from God, other wise no.

10) “Home again, I see him drinking weak tea,
Eating a stale chapatti, reading book.”
Ans-By these line the poet Dilip Chitre describes the old father’s condition in his own man
made world i.e in his house. He was served cold tea , Stale food and nobody talked with
him about his day spent. Like outside world, his inside world did not bother about him
(the old father) and they treated him as an alien.
