Study of the wind instruments and

Measurement of wind direction & wind speed

Dr. Dinesh Kumar

Assistant Professor (Agronomy) 1
Study of the wind instruments and Measurement of wind direction & wind speed
Objectives
• To know the wind speed of the day
• To know the wind direction at any time
• To understand the operation and usage of wind vane and anemometer
• To record and analyze wind data for identifying trends and environmental
influences

2
Study of the wind instruments and Measurement of wind direction & wind speed
• Wind is the air in horizontal motion caused due to differences in
atmospheric pressure
• Wind has to be specified by its direction and speed
• The movement of wind is almost horizontal and the vertical
component is very small
• For agrometeorological purpose, the observations are made at a height
of 10 feet which is a representative height of crop canopy

Wind Instruments
Wind vane: This is used in observatories to find the wind direction
Anemometer: It measures speed of the wind
Aerovane: This measures the velocity and direction of the wind simultaneously

Measurement: (Wind speed at any given time)

• To determine wind speed at the time of observation, the two
successive readings of the anemometer should be taken at an
interval of 3 minutes
• The difference between the two readings when multiplied by 20
will give the wind speed in kilometer per hour, if the anemometer is
calibrated in kilometers.
For example:
If the first re a d i n g o f anemometer is 4005.6 and the second reading
is 4006.8,
wind speed will be 20 × (4006.8-4005.6) = 20 x 1.2 = 24 kmph.

Measurement: (Mean Daily Wind speed)

• The anemometer reading is taken at 0700 hrs LMT
• When anemometer reading taken at 0700 hrs LMT of the previous
day is subtracted from today reading, it gives current day wind speed
Example:
Anemometer reading at 0700 hrs LMT of 05.12.2024 is 6754.9 and
Anemometer reading at 0700 hrs LMT of 04.12.2024 is 6475.4
Difference: 279.5
Mean daily wind speed on 05.12.2024 is given by
279.5/24 = 11.64 kmph
