+ 2
x − 6 x − 40 x − 16
2 2 4
(ii) − − 3
x − 2 x + 2 x − 4x

(a) Given that X = [ −5,10] , and the subsets A = [ −2, 2] , B = ( −4,8 ) and C = ( 0,5] . Find the
following sets and illustrate your answers on the number line.
(i) B'
(ii) ( A ∩ B) − C
(iii) A '∪ C '

(b) Given the supply function, P = 500 + 2Q , where P is the price of a bottle of Fanta
in kwacha , Q is the number of litres supplied.
(i) Graph the supply function. What is the meaning of the value at the vertical
intercept?
(ii) What is the value of Q when P = K 600 ?

QUESTION TWO

(a) Simplify the following and leave the answers in surds:

(i) ( 3 − 1)( 2 + 1)
(ii) (3 2 − 2 )( 3 3 + 2)
(b) Rationalize the denominators and simplify:

(ii)
2− 3
(c) Determine if the following functions are odd or even or neither
(i) f ( x ) = x3 + x
(ii) f ( x ) = x2 − x

(iii) f ( x ) = − 9 − x2

(ii) Hence calculate the range of values of x for which x 3 − 3 x 2 > 4 x − 12 .

(b) A supplier supplies 50 football scarves when the price is K6 each and 90 units
when the price is K11 each.
(i) Determine the equation of the supply function in the form P = h ( Q ) .

(ii) How many additional scarves are supplied for each successive K1 increase in
price?
(iii) Calculate the quantity supplied when the price is K8.5 per scarf.

(iv) Calculate the price when 120 scarves are supplied.

(v) What is the price below which no scarves are supplied?

QUESTION FOUR

(ii) ,
β α

(c) A small business profits over the last year have been related to the price of the product
only. The relationship is R ( x ) = −0.4 x 2 + 64 x − 2400 , where R is the revenue measured
in thousands of kwachas and x is the price of the product measured in kwachas.
i. What price would maximize the revenue?
ii. What is the maximum revenue possible?
iii. How much money would they lose if they gave the product away?
