Hi Juan,
I know you haven’t started learning English phrasal verbs yet, but you will soon! We use them all the time when
we’re speaking or writing personal emails. They’re cool but really difficult, because the two parts usually don’t
keep their normal meanings. Prepositions like in, on, out, up, and down often don’t keep their meanings in
phrasal verbs. For example, we (21) _____ something on a website, we look up a word in a dictionary, and we
check out activities at a gym! Sometimes the preposition has its normal meaning, but it is not easy to see why
we use a particular verb with it. For example, we have clothes on our bodies, so we use off when we are getting
ready for bed, but why do we say (22) _____ off? Sometimes, though, it is easy to see why the verb and the
preposition are used together. If we borrow money from someone, for example, we have to (23) _____ it back.
Another problem is that sometimes phrasal verbs have more than one meaning. For example, the phrasal verb
(24) _____ can mean find the answer, in a math problem, for example, but it also means to do exercise.
Finally, sometimes we only have a phrasal verb for a very common action. We don’t open a television – well,
TV engineers do, but not you and me – we don’t start it or begin it, we (25) _____.
Good luck when you start learning these wonderful verbs!

In early days no medical college took a woman student. Elizabeth Blackwell, however, was determined
to become a doctor. The young American wrote again and again to a number of medical colleges, asking
if she could be enrolled but each time the answer was NO.
Then one day, to her surprise, she got a letter from the dean of a college in Geneva, which said YES.
At first Geneva College, like the other colleges, was not willing to enroll Elizabeth. But later the

Elizabeth. When the male students met, most students took no interest in the matter. Of the rest, some
considered the young American’s idea interesting and some thought by having Elizabeth they would be

Thanksgiving is a festival which is celebrated every year in several countries around the world. In the USA, it
happens on the fourth Thursday of November and in Canada on the second Monday of October. In Germany,
some places celebrate Thanksgiving in September and others in October. In Japan, the day is the 23 rd of
November. In every case, it is a traditional way of giving thanks for the food which was grown that summer.
When I was a little girl, my younger brother and I used to look forward to Thanksgiving every year. In the
morning, our mom and dad would start cooking in the kitchen, and we would help. We always had a turkey,
which is like a big chicken. It took hours to cook, so we had to start early because we would always eat at 2.00
p.m. There were potatoes and lots of delicious vegetables like carrots. But my favorite thing was the pumpkin
pie which we had afterwards.
My aunt would sometimes come, because my mother used to love cooking for her sister and her nephew. But
they lived a long way from our town and most years they couldn’t come.
Before we ate, we would all sit around our big table. My parents would always ask us to say what we were
thankful for. I used to say “my family”, and once my little brother said his toys, which made us laugh. After
that, we would start eating.
In the afternoon, we would all sit down and watch the Thanksgiving parade. I used to love seeing the big
balloons with faces as they went past the TV cameras and listening to all the different bands. Afterwards, we
would sometimes play board games, or go to the park if it wasn’t too cold outside.

Environmentalists are getting more worried about the effects of fast fashion on the environment. Fast fashion
is the mass production of clothes at a low cost. They are put in shops and online quickly to create a high demand.
Manufacturers make 100 billion items of clothing every year. This is expected to grow by 60 per cent by 2030. The
fast fashion business model is having a negative effect on the environment. Many of the clothes end up in landfills
and are not recycled. Another negative effect on the environment is caused by the chemicals used to make the
clothes. These cause health problems for people working in clothes factories.
The way people are buying clothes is adding to the problem of clothing waste. Many years ago, people went
to stores and tried clothes on. People took more time and thought more carefully before they bought clothes. They
also wore them for longer. Today, people order cheap clothes on the Internet and if they don't like them, they send
them back. Some people say this is causing a throwaway society. Some people buy clothes and never even wear
them. The German media company Deutsche Welle wrote: "Every year in Europe, four million tons of clothing ends
up in the trash. Less than one per cent of this is recycled." It seems the fashion industry is not so sustainable.

questions.
Today, millions of people want to learn or improve their English but it is difficult to find the best method. Is it better
to study in Britain or America or to study in your own country?
The advantages of going to Britain seem obvious. Firstly, you will be able to listen to the language all the time. You
will be surrounded completely by the language wherever you go. Another advantage is that you have to speak the
language if you are with other people. At home, it is always possible to speak Vietnamese if you want to and the
learning is slower.
On the other hand, there are also advantages of staying at home to study. You don’t have to make big changes to
your life. As well as this, it is also a lot cheaper than going to Britain but it is never possible to achieve the results of
living in the UK. If you have a good teacher, I think you can learn in a more concentrated way than being in Britain
without going to a school.
So, in conclusion, I think that if you have enough time and enough money, the best choice is to spend some time in
the UK. This is simply not possible for most people, so being at home is the only viable option. The most important
thing to do in this situation is to maximize your opportunities: to speak only English in class and to try to use
English whenever possible outside the class.
Question 21. What is probably the topic of the passage?
A. How many people learn English
B. The best way to learn English
C. English schools in England and America
D. Learning English in Viet Nam
Question 22. What is one of the advantages of going to the UK to learn English?
A. There are no Vietnamese people in Britain.
B. There are very good teachers of English there.
C. You will have to speak English and not your language.
D. The language schools in the UK are always better.
Question 23. What is one of the advantages of staying at home to learn English?
A. The teachers aren’t very good in Britain.
B. You have to work too hard to make money in Britain.
C. You can concentrate on learning English only.
D. Your life can continue more or less as it was before.
Question 24. The underlined word "viable" in the passage probably means ________.
A. possible B. understandable C. important D. careful

A. learn English in Britain
