TOWERS FOR OVERHEAD LINES

1- SCOPE

1.1 This specification mainly covers the design, manufacturing, factory

testing, delivery and guarantee for transmission line towers .

2- DEFINITIONS

2.1 AAAC – Conductors

All aluminium alloy conductors . Aluminium alloy conductor, which has

sufficient mechanical strength, without steel reinforcement .

2.2 ACSR – Conductors

Aluminium conductors steel reinforced . Conductor, which has inside

conducting aluminium strands steel core in order to achieve sufficient
mechanical strength .

2.3 A – Frame Sheer Leg

A device used in the erection of an entire structure by tilting and pulling

by a tractor.

2.4 Anchor Bolt

A bolt partly embedded in the concrete of foundation by the means of

which the tower is fastened on the foundation, transmitting the stresses
from the tower to the foundation with adhesion and with its hooked end
or with crosswise plate or section components.

2.5 Angle Tower

A tower which makes deviation to the transmission line conductors'

direction from 0 to 90 degree.

2.6 Arcing device

Device to protect insulators and conductors against damage caused by
arcs.

2.7 Armour
A covering consisting of metal tapes or wires to protect a conductor
from mechanical effects.

2.8 Average Span “ aa ”

Average span is the mean value of two adjacent spans, one on each side
of the tower in equation.

aa = a1 + a2

2.9 Backfilling

Filling of the excavations in compacted layers not exceed 25cm when

the concrete has hardened sufficiently with proper approved soil
materials.

2.10 Bottom Plate

A plate equipped with holes for the anchor bolts welded or jointed with
bolts in the lower end of the main members of the lowest tower
substructure.

2.11 Branching Tower

A tower with tension insulator units designed specially for line

branching points.

2.12 Buckling Length “ L ”

The buckling direction unsupported free length between two adjacent

nodal points of a member.

2.13 Bundle Conductor

Is a bundle of two or more conductors belonging to the same phase and

connected to each other with spacers and mounted on the same insulator
unit.

2.14 Cap And Pin Insulator

An insulator unit with cap in one end pin in the other providing a
flexible joint to another unit .
