her three friends share the cake equally. What fraction of the cake does each
person get? If Sita eats two more parts later, what fraction of the cake has she
eaten in total?

2. Case Study 2: Water Distribution A tank contains 60 liters of water. A

gardener uses ⅔ of the water for watering plants and ¼ of the remaining
water for cleaning. How many liters of water are left in the tank?

3. Case Study 3: Painting a Wall A wall is painted in two stages. In the first
stage, ⅗ of the wall is painted. In the second stage, another ¼ of the wall is
painted. What fraction of the wall is painted in total? Is the entire wall
painted?

4. Case Study 4: Dividing a Field A farmer divides his field of 48 acres into two
parts. He gives ⅝ of the field to his elder son and the rest to his younger son.
How many acres does each son get?

5. Case Study 5: Sharing Chocolates Anu has a box of chocolates with 20

pieces. She gives ¾ of the chocolates to her friends and keeps the rest for
herself. How many chocolates does she keep?

Answers:

1. Each person gets 3/12 = 1/4 of the cake. Sita eats an additional 2/12 = 1/6,
so in total she eats 1/4 + 1/6 = 5/12 of the cake.

2. ⅔ of 60 = 40 liters are used for watering. Remaining water = 60 - 40 = 20

liters. ¼ of 20 = 5 liters are used for cleaning. Water left = 20 - 5 = 15 liters.

3. ⅗ + ¼ = 12/20 + 5/20 = 17/20 of the wall is painted. The entire wall is not
painted.
4. Elder son gets ⅝ of 48 = 30 acres. Younger son gets 48 - 30 = 18 acres.

5. ¾ of 20 = 15 chocolates are given away. Remaining chocolates = 20 - 15 = 5

chocolates.
