Civil Design of Solar Power System Installation
Civil Design of Solar Power System Installation
Installation
The civil designer is expected to consider the following points in the design and execution of the
solar power system installation, ensuring all requirements are met as per the client’s
specifications:
• Design the solar panel support structures with due consideration for optimum utilization
of available space on the roof and in shaded parking areas. Ensure the system is easy to
maintain and fully operational while adhering to authority guidelines.
• For shaded parking areas, design the parking structure including space for vehicles and
the integration of solar panels, ensuring stability and ease of access for maintenance.
• Conduct a stability check of the roof or parking area intended for solar panel installation.
Ensure that the proposed structure can safely support the additional weight and wind
loads specified.
• For roof-mounted systems, evaluate the existing roof slab structure and design the
supporting framework for the solar panels, considering any impact on roof integrity and
air circulation, particularly related to air conditioning systems.
• Design the parking shed frame structure as a rigid assembly of two-car space modules,
with steel pipe columns placed at a 2-car spacing. Ensure that cross members and
additional structural members can support the solar panels and withstand wind speeds
up to 160 km/h.
• Design the foundations for all structures, considering the load requirements and
coordination with any existing under/above-ground services. Obtain necessary permits
from local authorities for all foundations and structures.
• Ensure all structural components (e.g., columns, frames, cross members) are designed for
durability in harsh environmental conditions, adhering to BS5950 Part 1 for structural
steelwork and CP3: Chapter V, Part 2 for wind load calculations.
• The steel structure should be hot-dipped galvanized as per BS729 with a nominal coating
thickness of 120 microns after cutting, drilling, punching, or welding.
4. Corrosion Protection:
• All steel members should be provided with adequate protection against corrosion as per
BS5493, ensuring that they have a minimum life expectancy of 25 years with proper
maintenance.
• Hot-dip galvanized steel should meet a coating thickness of at least 80 microns for
steelwork and 120 microns for other components, and should be protected by an
approved epoxy paint system (zinc-based primer, high-build coat, and polyurethane top
coat) with a total thickness of 25mm DFT for outdoor structures.
• The structure and materials must be designed to withstand UAE’s harsh weather
conditions, including high temperatures (up to 60°C) and humidity (up to 100%). Ensure
that all materials (especially electrical components) are rated for operation in these
conditions and designed to minimize performance degradation due to aging.
• Design the structure in such a way that the installed solar system allows for easy
maintenance access. Ensure that no part of the structure obstructs the maintenance of
existing services or systems, such as air conditioning units, electrical systems, or
ventilation systems.
• Ensure full compliance with local authority requirements and regulations, such as those
provided by Etisalat and relevant municipal authorities. The design must meet the
specifications outlined in the "Installation of Solar Systems - Guidance Document" and
other relevant guidelines.
• Follow international safety standards for people and the environment during installation.
Adhere to Etisalat’s HSE guidelines and ensure that the system does not interfere with
normal operations on-site. Take appropriate precautions to avoid health and safety risks
to personnel and the surrounding environment.
• The design must ensure that the solar system has a minimum expected lifespan of 25
years, with no more than a 20% degradation in output over that period under UAE
conditions. The system should be designed to operate at optimal efficiency for the full life
of the installation
