AIR POLLUTION (Script)

For the beginning of the video insert sound effects of air and video clip or pictures of air if possible.

Narrator 1: Air is one of the most important things on our planet. It's what we breathe, and it's a vital
part of the Earth's ecosystem. Unfortunately, air pollution is a major problem in many parts of the
world. This video looks at the causes and effects of air pollution, and explores what we can do to reduce
its impact.

Narrator 2: Air pollution occurs when harmful substances are released into the air. These substances
can come from a variety of sources, including factories, power plants, cars, volcanoes, wildfires and even
burning trash. When these pollutants enter the atmosphere, they can cause a variety of problems. (If
possible please insert a pictures or videos for factories, power plants, cars, and burning trash).

Narrator 1: Exposure to high levels of air pollution can caused a variety of serious problems. Around the
world, nine out of 10 people breathe unhealthy air. Air pollution has an impact on the following:

Narrator 2: Harms on Human Health

According to the World Health Organization, an estimated seven million people die each year
from air pollution. Ground-level ozone causes muscles in the lungs to contract, making it difficult to
breathe. Exposure to high ozone levels can cause sore throat, coughing, lung inflammation, and
permanent lung damage. Respiratory diseases Cardiovascular damage Fatigue, headaches and anxiety
Irritation of the eyes, nose and throat damage to reproductive organs Harm to the liver, spleen and
blood nervous system damage.

Narrator 1: Harms on animals and plants

Wildlife can also experience many of the same negative health effects of air pollution that
humans do. Damage to respiratory systems is the most common effect on animals, but neurological
problems and skin irritations are also common. Plants and crops grow less when exposed to long-term
air pollution.

Narrator 2: Air pollution creates a hole in our ozone layer.

The hole in the ozone layer is caused by air pollutants. Chemicals used as refrigerants, such as
chlorofluorocarbons (CFCs), contain chlorine atoms. Releasing chlorine atoms into the atmosphere
destroys ozone. A single chlorine atom can destroy thousands of ozone molecules.

Narrator 1: The ozone layer is a region in the earth’s stratosphere that contains high concentrations of
ozone and protects the earth from the harmful ultraviolet radiations of the sun. The role the ozone hole
itself plays in global warming which is one aspect of climate change.

Narrator 2: Global warming is the long-term warming of the planet’s overall temperature. When carbon
dioxide (CO2) and other air pollutants build up in the atmosphere, they absorb sunlight and solar
radiation that have already reflected off the surface of the earth.

Narrator 1: The effects of Global Warming are: Climate change, Sea levels are expected to rise between
10 and 32 inches, Hurricanes and other storms are likely to become stronger, less freshwater will be
available, and Droughts and heatwaves increase.
Narrator 2: The following are ways on how to reduce air pollution:

1. Walking, cycling, or taking public transportation, especially trains, are preferable if at all
possible
2. Consume locally and seasonally grown food to reduce transportation-related pollution.
3. Compost or recycle organic waste. Otherwise, the biodegradable trash breaking down in
landfills will emit methane.
4. Reduce the temperature of the air conditioning because it uses a lot of energy. Instead,
use a fan.
5. Reduce the amount of heat that escapes from and enters your home by improving the
insulation, which will cut down on the need for additional appliances.
6. Use energy-saving lights, such as LEDs, and turn off the lights when not in use.
7. Refuse what you don't need, reduce what you do, reuse as much as you can, repurpose
anything you aren't using anymore, recycle, or compost everything that has reached the
end of its useful life.
8. Reduction of forest fires and smoking. The collecting of garbage and
getting it on fire in dry seasons or dry leaves catching fires is a huge
factor for causing air pollution, moreover smoking also causes air
pollution and causes the air quality to worsen along with obviously
damaging one’s health.
9. Avoid usage of crackers. The use of crackers during festivals and
weddings is sadly one of the biggest contributors to air pollution.
10. Implement Afforestation Last but not the least, plant and grow as
many trees as possible. The practice of planting trees provides a lot of
benefits to the environment and helps with the release of oxygen.

(Closing)

Narrator 1: It is never too late to do something about the state of our environment. Every effort, no
matter how inconsequential, counts. And like what Jane Goodall said “You cannot get through a single
day without having an impact on the world around you. What you do makes a difference and you have
to decide what kind of a difference you want to make.”
