HIGHER COLLEGE OF ARCHITECTURE, URBANISM,
AND CIVIL ENGENEERING ( ISAUBTP )

ENGLISH LANGUAGE DEPARTMENT

Option : Civil Engineering

Level: Licence 2

Text:
A civil engineer is an engineer who specialises in the design and construction of
buildings, structures and infrastructure in the civil field. It carries out public and
private civil works, strategic infrastructures such as roads, bridges, railways,
tunnels, dikes, riverbanks, ports, airports. It follows all phases of a building's life
cycle, from design to execution, from renovation to routine maintenance and
extraordinary maintenance.
In the project preparation phase, the civil engineer is responsible for the
production of drafts, plans and construction projects, on paper and computer,
using CAD software. It collects topographic data on the construction site, in
order to carry out the analysis of the terrain and its hydrogeological
characteristics.
A civil engineer then carries out structural calculations, prepares feasibility
studies, draws up estimates of time and costs, studies the construction equipment
to be used (reinforced concrete, steel, bricks, etc.). When defining the details of
the executive project, the civil engineer is required to comply with the standards
that govern the construction sector, especially from the point of view of
environmental impact and constraints related to the landscape.
The civil engineer then monitors the actual construction work: he communicates
with the builders, subcontractors and site managers, for example to check that
the technical specifications are met, that the equipment used complies with the
guidelines and that the occupational health and safety standards are applied.
They also offer effective technical solutions to solve any problems that may arise
on the construction site.
The career of a civil engineer can develop in different directions: some of the
main specializations are structural and geotechnical engineering, hydraulic
engineering, infrastructure and transportation engineering.
Another branch offers interesting development prospects is earthquake
engineering, which is responsible for verifying the level of seismic safety of
strategic buildings and infrastructures and studying seismic adequacy and
improvement interventions.
All areas provide access to vertical progression, which leads an expert civil
engineer to occupy management and management roles, for example as a project
manager, or to supervise and coordinate the site activity as a works manager.
A civil engineer can also turn to consulting and work independently, possibly
opening their own engineering practice. He can also undertake an academic
career in engineering schools, thus devoting himself to research and teaching, or
in the commercial sector, for companies that produce construction technologies
and materials, construction and earthmoving machinery.

Exercise 1: Translation
THEME: Translate into French the following passage
The professional and personal skills required in civil engineer job offers are as
follows:
• Knowledge of construction techniques and materials;
• Skills in the design, construction management, estimation and testing of
civil works;
• Knowledge of technical drawing, design and structural analysis software
(such as CAD and BIM);
• Ability to perform hydrogeological surveys and analyses of a construction
site;
• Knowledge of technical standards on construction;
• Management and organizational skills;
• Problem-solving skills

VERSION: Translate into English the following Text.

Texte:
chantier.
