Answer all the questions!
1. Given here are the solidus and liquidus temperatures for the copper–gold system. Construct the
phase diagram for this system and label each region. [10]
2. A hypothetical A–B alloy of composition 40 wt% B–60 wt% A at some temperature is found to
consist of mass fractions of 0.66 and 0.34 for the a and b phases, respectively. If the composition
of the a phase is 13 wt% B–87 wt% A, what is the composition of the b phase?
[8]
3. A lead–tin alloy of composition 30 wt% Sn–70 wt% Pb is slowly heated from a temperature of
150 0C.
(a) At what temperature does the first liquid phase form?
(b) What is the composition of this liquid phase?
(c) At what temperature does complete melting of the alloy occur?
(d) What is the composition of the last solid remaining prior to complete melting?
[12]
4. Refer to the Pb-Sn phase diagram in the previous question. You have fabricated three
different Pb-Sn alloys of the following compositions: i) 75 wt. %
Pb and 25 wt. % Sn, ii) 40 wt. % Pb and 60 wt. % Sn, and iii) 10 wt. % Pb and 90 wt.
% Sn.
a) Determine the phases, phase compositions, and phase amounts present at
equilibrium at 185°C and 181°C (just above and below the eutectic temperature of
183°C) for each alloy composition.
b) Sketch the microstructure you would expect to observe at 181°C for each alloy and
label the phases present. Make sure your sketch qualitatively agrees with the phase
fractions you calculated in part a). [20]
