1 Write any three requirements of a good alignment of railway lines? (3)


2 What are rail fastenings? Mention any four fastenings. (3)
3 Point out three advantages of centralized traffic control system. (3)
4 Draw the sketch of a semaphore signal and mark the components. (3)
5 List six human errors which cause railway accidents. (3)
6 Point out the three categories of high speed track. (3)
7 How tunnels are classified based on alignment? (3)
8 List different tunnel sections and identify the situation where a circular section is (3)
preferred.
9 List three methods adopted for dust prevention inside the tunnel. (3)
10 Why temporary ventilation is provided during tunnel construction? (3)

Module I
11 a) Explain the term coning of wheels. With a neat sketch explain the behaviour of (7)
coned wheels on straight track and level track.
b) What were the different types of gauges used in India? Currently a uniform (7)
gauge is adopted. Do you think it is a good approach? Provide your reasons.

12 a) How creep is caused in rails? Provide the remedial measures to mitigate creep. (7)
b) Find out the equilibrium cant for a 2º curve on a broad gauge track if 15 trains, (7)
10 trains, 5 trains and 2 trains are running at a speed of 50 km/hr, 60 km/hr, 70
km/hr and 80 km/hr.
