ASSIGNMENT # 2: Due November 20th in class Typed with cover page

CONDUCTING YOUR OWN EXPERIMENT

1. You may choose to design your own simple experiment, or you can
replicate some easy and simple experiments such as The Stroop Test or
simple Memory tests. This link will show you some ways to do this:
https://www.verywellmind.com/a-short-term-memory-experiment-
2795664?print

2. You are free to modify these simple experiments if you wish to.

3. Are the Stroop and Memory tasks suitable for a repeated measures design
(same person can try out both tasks) or must they be an independent
groups design (person can only complete one of the tasks)?

4. In the Memory task should you vary the order of delivery of the lists of
words to remember; that is, for one participant the list of unrelated words
comes first followed by the list of related words, and for the next the list
of related words is presented first then the unrelated ones? Can you think
of a reason why a researcher may want to do this on some tasks in some
experiments?
5. Identity the independent variable.

6. Identify the dependent variable.

7. Try to find some participants for your experiment in our class. 10 is a good
number but we will be flexible given the time constraints of getting
participants.

8. Are you using a repeated measures design (same participants in both

tasks) or an independent groups design (participants complete only one of
the tasks)?

9. Calculate the means of the two groups of data; that is, for a Memory task,
what’s the average number of words recalled by people who try to recall
the list of unrelated words vs the average number of words recalled when
people try to recall the list of related words. If you use the Stroop test,
then calculate the average time it takes to complete the Stroop test when
words match the colour vs when they are different. Note you are only
doing one of these experiments (Memory or Stroop) or an experiment of
your choice.

10. Construct a bar graph to show your results. (not a hand drawing
please)

11. Discuss the findings and how they relate to what you’ve learned in the
chapter on memory and learning.
