How much information do I give
my child?

It can be hard to know how to

teach your child about how
babies are made.

There is lots of information.

You might be worried about saying

the wrong thing.

It is important to give your child

information that is right for them.

It should be easy for them to

understand.

It should help to answer their

questions.

If your child:

• is 4-5 years old

• knows the names of the private

body parts

• can point to where the private

body parts are

You can say something like:

• babies grow in a special place

inside a woman’s tummy called
the uterus

• the uterus protects the baby

as it grows

• babies start out very small and

grow for 9 months until they are
ready to be born

If your child:

• is 5-8 years old

• knows the names of private body

parts, where they are and what
they do

• knows a little bit about the male

and female reproductive system

You can say something like:

• you need a special part from

a man and a woman to make
a baby.

The part from the man is called

sperm and the part from the
woman is called the egg

• the egg and the sperm join

together in the uterus.

When this happens a baby

is made

• the baby grows in the uterus for 9
months until it is ready to be born

• when the baby is ready to be born

it leaves the uterus and comes out
of the mum’s vagina

If your child:

• is 8 or more years old

• knows the names of private body

parts and what they do

• knows about male and female

reproductive systems and what
they do

• knows about different types of

relationships including intimate
relationships

You can say something like:

• a man and woman need to have

sex to make a baby

• this means that the man puts his

penis into the woman’s vagina.
Both people have to say yes
for this to happen

• the sperm leaves the penis and

goes into the vagina. It swims
up the vagina into the uterus

• if the sperm finds an egg in the

uterus it can join it. There isn’t
always an egg in the uterus.
This only happens sometimes

• when the sperm and egg join

a baby starts to grow

Talking about different ways
babies are made

Not all babies are made by a man

and a woman having sex.

Some people might need help from

a doctor to have a baby.

Some people might ask somebody

else to have the baby for them.

This is called surrogacy.

Sometimes a baby might grow up

with different parents to the ones
they were born with.

The baby might live with their

grandparents or other family
members.

They might join a new family.

This is called adoption.

Or they might live with another
family for a short time.

This is called foster care.

Some babies might have a mother

and father.

Some babies might have two

mothers or two fathers.

Some babies might only have

a mother.

Or they might only have a father.

All of this is OK.

It is important to explain to your

child that all families are different.

They are still a family just like other

families.

There are some resources at the
bottom of this page that you can
use to talk about different types
of families.

How to teach about where

babies come from

Sometimes it can be hard to teach

your child about where babies
come from.

You might not know what to say.

You might not know where to start.

This is OK.

There are different ways that you

can help your child to learn about
where babies come from.

You can try the things below to
teach your child about where babies
come from.

1. Look for times in your child’s life

to start a conversation about how
babies are made.

These might be:

• seeing a pregnant woman on

the bus, at school or at the
shops

• a school friend has a new baby

brother or sister

• people on TV are talking about

having a baby

2. Find the type of activity that your

child likes.

These might include:

• looking at picture books

• using worksheets

• playing games

• using photos

• arts and crafts

Doing activities together can make

learning less stressful for you and
your child.

3. Do not wait for your child to ask

you about where babies come
from.

You can bring it up with them

instead.

This tells your child to know that it

is OK for them to talk to you about
these things.
