Cycling in the countryside

7
By Chris Jones, aged 14
Have you ever been cycling? This spring my older brother and I left the busy
city and spent a long weekend cycling in the countryside. Our average speed was
only around 14 kph, but that didn't matter. We hadn't come to break any speed
records, or to get fit and healthy. All we wanted was some fresh air and a break
from schoolwork. My bike only once went more than 30 kph, and that was when I
raced my brother down the only hill on our route.
We really enjoyed cycling along flat, traffic-free country paths. There was
plenty of spring sunshine, but it was quite cold, especially in the mornings. We
didn't mind, though — and we soon warmed up as we rode along. Our only
problem was when my brakes started making a terrible noise. But I didn't mind as
it gave us an excuse to visit a café while a helpful bike mechanic had a look at it.
That was one of the best things about our route: every few kilometres there
was a village where we could find everything we needed. All the local people were
really friendly, too. However, most places we stopped at served chips with all the
meals, which soon got fairly boring.
One night we were woken at 4 a.m. by a group of rugby fans singing loudly in
the hotel corridor. We were tired and bad-tempered when we set off the next
morning and very nearly got lost, but soon felt more cheerful when the sun came
out. That's what I like about cycling — it's simple and it's fun. If you're looking for
a short break that's active and cheap, then cycling is a great choice!
11. What is Chris Jones doing in this text?
A. describing the different places he saw while cycling
B. comparing cycling to other forms of exercise
C. suggesting places to stay on a cycling holiday
D. recommending cycling as a good type of holiday
12. What do we find out about Chris's bike?

A. It needed attention at one point.
B. It was too old to go fast.
C. It had trouble going up hills.
D. It wasn't as good as his brother's.
13. Chris was pleased because…
A. he felt much healthier than before he began his trip.
B. he and his brother had chosen a good route.

WRITING TEST
Time allowed: 45 minutes
==========================================================

PART 1:

You are Ann. Write a letter to your penfriend, Vivianin about 120 words to tell
him/ her aboutan activity you enjoyed in your free time when you were young,
including information about:

- What it was;
- Where you did it;
- Who you did it with;
And explain why you enjoyed it.

You do NOT need to write any address.

Dear Vivian,
How are you these day? I am happy to receive your letter telling me about
your lecture activities. In the letter, you ask me about what I enjoyed doing when I
was young. These are what i did. In my free time, I used to go swimming in a lake
near my house in summer. In winter when it was cold, I often went jogging in a
park or around the lake. You see, doing physical exercise was very good for my
health. I used to weigh 80 kilograms although I was only 1.65 cm tall. After
training, I lost weight and became fit. Now, I weigh only 60 kilograms. I can have
better sleep at night. I suggest that you do more exercise. You may do it with some
of your friends or by yourself. For me, I have a classmate who always practices
with me.
I hope we can talk more about our life later. I look forward to hearing from
you soon.
Sincerely your.
Ann.

PART 2:

CODE 01: Write an about 150-word essay to express your opinions on the
following question:

Do you prefer to live in a house or in a flat?

How to select your favourite accommodation depends on different people.

Some may choose a house while the others may prefer to live in a flat instead.
Each type of accommodation has it own advantages and disadvantages. For me,
living is a house is a good choice.
Firstly, when you live in a house, you can have an environment in which to
talk to your neighbours, as compared to a flat which is closed to others.
Secondly, a house is not merely where you shelter. It is also a saving because
house prices never stop going up. You can sell it for a bigger sum of money after
10 years or more.
Thirdly, choosing a house enables you to have more space as you can build a
2 or 3-storey one. The higher the house is, the more space you have.
To sum up/ In short, I prefer a house to a flat for the above reasons that a flat
does not have.
