EXPLORING THE IMPACT OF URBAN EXPANSION EXTENT ON AGRICULTURAL LAND USING GIS

AND RS: CASE OF CHIRO TOWN

Abstract

Urban expansion is a critical phenomenon affecting land use and agricultural practices
worldwide. This study aims to explore the impact of urban expansion on agricultural land in
Chiro Town, utilizing Geographic Information Systems (GIS) and Remote Sensing (RS)
technologies. The research will analyze spatial data over time to assess changes in land use
patterns, quantify the extent of urbanization, and evaluate its implications for agricultural
sustainability. By integrating satellite imagery with GIS tools, this study will provide insights into
how urban growth encroaches upon agricultural areas, potentially leading to reduced arable
land and altered farming practices. The findings are expected to inform local policymakers and
stakeholders about the need for sustainable urban planning that considers agricultural
preservation.

Introduction

The rapid growth of urban areas poses significant challenges to agriculture, particularly in
developing regions where land is often limited. Chiro Town, located in Ethiopia, serves as a
pertinent case study due to its ongoing urbanization and reliance on agriculture for economic
sustenance. This section will outline the objectives of the study, the significance of using GIS
and RS technologies, and the specific research questions that guide this investigation.

Literature Review

A comprehensive review of existing literature will be conducted to contextualize the

relationship between urban expansion and agricultural land use. Previous studies have
demonstrated that urban sprawl can lead to habitat fragmentation, loss of arable land, and
increased competition for resources. Key themes will include:

1
Theoretical frameworks on urbanization impacts.

Methodologies employing GIS and RS in similar studies.

Case studies highlighting successful interventions in other regions.

Methodology

This section will detail the methodological approach employed in this research:

Data Collection: Satellite imagery from sources such as Landsat or Sentinel-2 will be acquired
for multiple years to capture changes in land use.

GIS Analysis: Using software like ArcGIS or QGIS, spatial analysis techniques such as change
detection will be applied to identify areas of urban expansion versus agricultural loss.

Field Surveys: Complementary field surveys may be conducted to validate remote sensing data
and gather qualitative insights from local farmers regarding perceived impacts.

Results

The results section will present findings from the GIS analysis, including maps illustrating
changes in land cover over time. Statistical analyses will quantify the extent of urban
encroachment on agricultural lands, providing a clear picture of how much farmland has been
lost or altered due to urban development.

Discussion

This section will interpret the results within the broader context of sustainable development
goals (SDGs). It will discuss potential implications for food security, local economies, and
environmental health while considering socio-economic factors influencing both urban growth
and agricultural viability.

2
Conclusion

The study concludes by summarizing key findings regarding the impact of urban expansion on
agricultural lands in Chiro Town. Recommendations for policymakers aimed at balancing urban
development with agricultural preservation will be provided based on empirical evidence
gathered throughout the research process
