STTN122 TUTORIAL CHAPTER 10 &11

1. In your work for a national health organization, you are asked to monitor the amount of
sodium in a certain brand of cereal. You find that a random sample of 52 cereal servings
has a mean sodium content of 232 milligrams. At α = 0.04, can you conclude that the
mean sodium content per serving of cereal is more than 230 milligrams? Assume the
population standard deviation is known to be 10 milligrams. Use the critical value
approach.
2. One of your distributors reports an average of 150 sales per day for the distributorship.
You suspect that this average is not accurate, so you randomly select 35 days and
determine the number of sales each day. The sample mean is 143 daily sales with a
population standard deviation of 15 sales. At α = 0.01, is there enough evidence to doubt
the distributor’s reported average. Use the critical value approach.
3. In screening women for breast cancer, doctors use a method that fails to detect cancer
in 20% of the women who actually have the disease. Suppose a new method has been
developed that researchers hope will detect cancer more accurately. This new method
was used to screen a random sample of 140 women known to have breast cancer. Of
these, the new method failed to detect cancer in 12 women. Does this sample provide
evidence at α = 0.05 that the failure rate of the new method differs from the one
currently in use? Use critical value approach.
4. 1500 randomly selected pine trees were tested for traces of the Bark Beetle infestation.
It was found that 153 of the trees showed such traces. Test the hypothesis that more
than 10% of the Tahoe trees have been infested. (Use a 5% level of significance)
5. Production quantities for two assembly line workers are shown in the following table.
These production line workers are manually filling bags of potatoes. Each data value
indicates the number of bags filled during a randomly selected one hour period and the
mean weight of the bags and the standard deviation in the weight of the bags. Based on
these numbers can it be concluded that worker 2 is filling the bags with a higher weight
than worker 1?. Use α = 0.1
Worker 1 Worker 2
Number of bags produced 35 45
Mean 20.2 21.4
Standard Deviation 1.48 2.41

6. Researchers conducted a study of smartphone use among adults. A cell phone company
claimed that iPhone smartphones are more popular with whites (non-Hispanic) than
with African Americans. The results of the survey indicate that of the 232 African
American cell phone owners randomly sampled, 5% have an iPhone. Of the 1,343 white
cell phone owners randomly sampled, 10% own an iPhone. Test at a 10% level of
significance.
7. Two types of medication for hives are being tested to determine if there is a difference
in the proportions of adult patient reactions. Twenty out of a random sample of 200
adults given medication A still had hives 30 minutes after taking the medication. Twelve
out of another random sample of 200 adults given medication B still had hives 30
minutes after taking the medication. Test at a 1% level of significance.
