ROTTER'S INCOMPLETE

SENTENCES BLANK

INTRODUCTION
• Given by Julian B. Rotter in 1950.

• It is a semi structured projective test.

•Comprises 40 incomplete sentences.

•Usual time taken is around 15 to 20 minutes.

•Reflects latent feelings and cognitions.


PURPOSE OF THE TEST
Many psychologist integrate
Qualitative data from RISB.

To gain insight into an individual's


personality, emotional states,
interpersonal relationships,and
adjustment .
It is widely used in clinical
settings, counseling, and research
to assess various aspects of an
individual's personality, including
their self-concept, coping
strategies, and interpersonal
dynamics.
ADMINISTERING THE TEST

The RISB consists of a series of incomplete sentence stems of 40 items. The


individual is instructed to complete each sentence stem with their own thoughts or
responses.

Administer mostly on educated individuals and on both child and adults.

The test can be administered both individually and in group setting.


Three versions of RISB are available:

•College form
• High school form
•Adult form

Versions have same numbers of sentences but slightly


different wording appropriate to each age group.
RESPONSES

•Omission responses

•Conflict responses

•Positive responses

• Neutral responses
OMISSION RESPONSES

Omission responses are designated as those for which no answer is given or


for which the thought is incomplete.

NOTE:- if there are more than twenty omission the test is considered unscorable
and the test become invalid.
CONFLICT RESPONSES
Responses range from C1 to C3 according to the severity of the conflict or
maladjustment.
The numerical weight for the conflict responses are C1 =4,C2= 5 and C3= 6.

C1 category are responses in which concern is expressed regarding such


things as the financial problems, specific school difficulties, identifications
with minority group.

Example:"The only trouble is ___ Financial."


C2 include expressions of inferiority feelings, generalized school problems, lack
of goals,feeling of inadequacy and social difficulty.

Example of C2,"My greatest worry is_i will fail attain my goal in life_".

C3 include suicidal wishes, serial conflicts, severe family problems, feeling of


confusion, fear of insanity and strong negative attitudes of people in general.

Example of C3," I wish _I were dead_".


The only trouble _is an inner confusion _."
POSITIVE RESPONSES
'P' or positive responses are those indicating a healthy or hopeful state of
mind. Responses range from P1 to P3 .
P1 = 2,P2= 1, and P3=0

P1 responses are those which deal with positive attitudes toward school
,hobbies,sports, expression of warm feeling towards an individual.

Example of P1,"I like_sports_".


P2 indicate a generalized positive feeling towards people,good social
adjustment, healthy family life,optimism and humor.

Example of P2," I am best_when I'm with people _.


".

P3 indicate clear cut good natured humor, highly optimistic and warm
acceptance.

Example of P3," The best_is yet to come_".


NEUTRAL RESPONSES
'N' or neutral responsesare those not falling clearly into either of
the above categories. They are generally on a simple descriptive
level.

Example , " Most girls_are females _."


"When I was a child _ I spoke as a child_".

■All the "N" responses are scored 3.


cut off score is 135

•If above 135 maladjustment

•if 135 or below 135 , adjustment

•Scoring range is 0 to 6 for one item.

P3=0,P2=1,P1=2, N=3,C1=4,C2=5,C3=6
Advantages of RISB

· This test has freedom of response.

· The purpose of test has a disguise.

· It can be administered in groups.


Disadvantages of RISB
· It requires knowledge and general skill of personality analysis
And it cannot be machine scored.
· When the subject is illiterate, disturbed or uncooperative, the
material obtained might be insufficient.
· The response style of the subject plays an important role in its
scoring.
