a.

A cast iron beam has an I-section with top flange 80mmX40mm, web 120mmX20mm and
bottom flange 160mmX40mm. If the tensile stress is not to exceed 30N/mm 2 and compressive
stress 90N/mm2, what is the maximum uniformly distributed load the beam can carry over a
simply supported span of 6 m if the larger flange is in tension.
b. A 200mm wide and 400mm deep timber is strengthened with 6mm thick and 200mm wide steel
plate as shown in Figure Q below and Figure Q(1)b .Determine the extreme fibre stresses, if the
section is subjected to a moment of 40kN-m. Given = 20.
c. A timber beam of size 150 mm X300 mm is strengthened with 6 mm steel plate as shown. How
much uniformly distributed load can this beam carry if it is used as a simply supported beam
over a span of 6 m?. Take modulus ratio(Es/Et) as 20 and maximum stress in timber as 8 Mpa
and maximum steel as 150 MPa.
d. Calculate the thickness and number of leaves of semi-elleptic carriage spring, which is
required to support a central load of 2KN on a span of 1m if the maximum stress is limited
to 225MN/m2 and the central deflection to 75mm.The breadth of each leaf can be assumed
to be 100mm. For the spring material E=210GN/m2
e. Determine the deflection at a point 1 m from the left-hand end of the beam loaded shown in
figure Q b(1) using Macaulay’s method. El = 0.65 MNm 2
f. Use Mohr’ moment method to derive the maximum slope and deflection for a cantilever
carrying a uniformly distributed load over its span (5mks)
g. A cantilever of length 10m carries a uniformly distributed load over the entire length, if
the deflection at the free end is 40mm, find the slope at the free end (5mks)
h. A simply supported beam of span 5 m has a cross section 150 mmX250 mm. If the
permissible stress is 10 Mpa. Determine the maximum intensity of uniformly distributed load
it can carry and the maximum concentrated load P applied at 2 m from one end it can carry (7
Marks)
i. A leaf spring of span 800 mm has five leaves of width 60 mm and thickness 10 mm. What
maximum load can it take if the stress is to be limited to 250 Mpa (5 Marks) .

j. A uniform beam 2.5 m long and simply supported at its end and is loaded in such a manner that
the deflection y m at any distance x m from one of the support is 𝑦 = 𝐴𝑥 +Bx where A and B are
constants. Show that the bending moments is a constant along the beam and find its numerical
values if the deflection is zero at the ends and 25mm at the mid span. The flexural rigidity (EI)
being 57.5kNm2
k. Determine the slope and deflection at the free end of a cantilever beam shown in figure Q 3 (a)
by Mohr’s moment area method . Take flexural rigidity (EI) as 400kNm 2.
l. A uniform beam ABCDE is simply and symmetrically supported at B and D as shown in figure. It
carries uniformly load of 20 kN/m over the cantilevered position AB and DE ad a concentrated
loads of 60 kN at the mid point C. Determine the deflection at the mid point C and the end
points. Take E as 200 Gpa and I for the cross section of the beam about the appropriate axis as
5000 cm4.
